From John Wayne to JFK and from Julia Roberts to Queen Victoria people have fallen in love wearing a Claddagh ring. Over the years it has become a symbol of Irish identity recognised all around the world. It speaks of eternal life, but can also have a darker side too. The Claddagh tour is unique in offering an in-depth exploration of the tales and traditions surrounding the Claddagh ring and relates it to the village from which it sprang. The relaxed pace walk takes in several of Galway's neighbourhood and includes a stop at a great cafe on the way. The tour is also unique in offering a ring included in the price of the tour (terms and conditions apply). What you'll see and do
Galway City Museum
The museum starting point means we can get a great view over the city, especially the Claddagh area that we will be exploring. The museum also contains the world's oldest claddagh a ring and a rather strange artefact created by the probable orginator of the Claddgh ring.

River Corrib
We begin our stroll over to the Claddagh around the river area. Here we can take in the glorious views of the long walk and here some of the superstitions and traditions of the people of the Claddagh. Hopefully we will also be able to take a look at an example of a traditional 'hooker' boat floating on Europe's most powerful river.

Claddagh Arts Centre
Next up we have a look at a typical example of a Claddagh cottage, to say that it's 'pretty' or 'quaint' doesn't really do it justice. Red doors, thatched roof and possibly the King's cat hanging around...it's perfect! It may be a re-creation but it makes it much easier to imagine the scene some 100 years ago or more. Please note: The property allow entry to the exterior but the inside is usually only open for special events.

Eglinton Canal
Leaving the Claddgh we take a wonder through the 'West' of Galway. This authentic and genuine area is home to some great cafes. We will stop off in one and grab a tea or coffee and maybe a cookie or scone (all included of course)

Returning to the bustling centre of Galway we take in a few places that remind of us of both some of the more mythological stories surrounding the ring. We can also relate how some of the world's 'A-list' celebrities have embraced wearing the claddagh ring...from John Wayne to Princess grace and from JFK to Julia Roberts...and not forgetting a certain vampire...all will be revealed

Amazing experience, would 100% reccomend!
We had an amazing time with our tourguide, Alexandria. Even though she had informed us that it was one of her first tours, you never would have known. She was extremely kind, informative, and exactly the kind of guide you would want to tour Galway. Throughout the tour, we visited the museum, walked along the river, got coffee and sweets at a cafe, went all throughout Claddagh, got Claddagh rings, and even met the town crier! We would definitely recommend Alexandria and this tour to others visiting Galway.

Highly recommend this lovely tour!
I booked the tour with a friend over from the States as I’d never really done a walking tour of Galway city. Neil the tour guide was excellent: weaving in history of Galway City and The Claddagh as well as the people and of course the famous jewellry. The highlight was definitely the walk around The Claddagh (a part of Galway we hadn’t seen before) and learning about the history. We got to choose our own rings from the shop and enjoyed speaking with the staff there as well. Thanks Neil, for a wonderful day! We learned things we never knew and had a great time!
