Chania city is quite unique because it’s been influenced by many cultures over the centuries. From Roman king Kidon to rulers of Byzantine Empire, from Venetian royalties to Turkish conquerors. Our next stop is Chrissopigi monastery, one of the most famous nunneries in Greece today. It was intended as male monastery when it was founded in the 16th century, However, during many centuries Crete struggled with occupations and conquests, the monastery suffered as well and was finally destroyed in 1821 during the Revolution. In 1976, the first three nuns of today's fraternity returned to the monastery to rebuild it and restore all the historical heirlooms. Nowadays, nuns are involved in doing embroidery, preservation of old books and icons, bookbinding, book publishing, apiculture, candle making, production of incense and soap, etc.

Very informative and...
Very informative and laid-back with a wonderful stop at a monastery. Seeing Shaniya was wonderful! Our guide Tatiana was exceptional and very accommodating. She provided an awful lot of information and facts that were great to hear. Thoroughly enjoyed this tour on the island of Crete.

The Saturday local market starts really early in the morning with local vendors selling everything from Fruits , Vegetables, honey , olives , dried fruits and meat , poultry and clothes and home articles also ! Walked the complete market ! Outside loud and fun !

Very touristic
Even in October, there are a lot of people in the small shopping streets. Big disappointment: the magnificent municipal market is closed and half demolished for renovation, given the progress of the work I think it will remain closed for several years ☹️

Impressive place with many shops to buy souvenirs and different offers. We felt it was quite safe to walk around, you should always keep an eye on your belongings anyway. Good to visit early, but I don't recommend eating near this place.
