What you'll see and do
Originally the only entrance to the fortified city, this iconic yellow gate is the symbol of Cartagena. Standing under its arches, you are at the threshold between the modern city and the colonial past. It opens into the Plaza de los Coches, where you’ll find the famous Portal de los Dulces, a row of stalls selling traditional coastal sweets made by local families for generations.
30 minutes here
Plaza de Bolivar
This is the most peaceful and shaded spot in the city. Surrounded by massive trees and colonial buildings with ornate balconies, it houses the Palace of the Inquisition and the Gold Museum. It’s the perfect place to sit on a bench, watch the Palenqueras in their colorful dresses, and feel the "old world" atmosphere of the 16th century.
30 minutes here
Baluarte de Santo Domingo
You can actually walk along the top of the massive coral-stone walls that encircle the city. The section near the Baluarte de Santo Domingo is the most famous spot to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea. It’s a stunning reminder of the city’s military past, built to defend the Spanish Crown's gold from pirates like Sir Francis Drake.
30 minutes here
Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver
This majestic church and monastery are dedicated to the "Slave of the Slaves," a priest who spent his life ministering to the Africans brought to the city’s port. The plaza in front is filled with quirky iron sculptures and is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Inside, the quiet, lush courtyard offers a stark, beautiful contrast to the humid heat outside.
30 minutes here
This is the vibrant heart of the city’s social life. In the center of the square sits the famous "Gertrudis" statue by the legendary Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Local legend says that rubbing her (well-worn) bronze curves brings luck in love. Surrounded by open-air restaurants and the oldest church in the city, it’s the best place to enjoy the evening breeze and live music.

Lovely food tour by a lovely tour guide
Gloria was an amazing local guide to the city of Cartagena and the culture surrounded by the city's food. I love her warm and kind personality, and really appreciated her knowledge and care to share her knowledge. As someone with a lot of food intolerances, I was apprehensive to join my group for this tour, but I'm so glad I did! Gloria was extremely accommodating and was able to let me know what I should not eat. I'd recommend this as a great intro to Cartagena for both English and Spanish speakers alike. It was a great way to explore the city and eat some delicious foods along the way!
Response from the operator: We’re thankful you chose to experience the city with us. We hope our tour offered a natural way to discover its food, neighborhoods, and local side. We were glad to have you as our guest!

Cartagena on Mothers’ day
Interesting tour. Guide (Gloria) had good knowledge of the culture, history and gastronomy of the city. Food selection was varied and tasty. A good value. Our personal experience was clouded because of it being mother’s day and most restaurants were at full capacity and thus the itinerary had to be revised at the last minute. Also, Cartagena’s temperature is provably too hot for a noonish walking tour.
Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to post this! It is always encouraging to hear that the experience felt natural, enjoyable, and worth remembering overall. We would be glad to host you again with Secret Food Tours.

+

How far in advance should I book Cartagena Old Town Authentic Food Tour with 9 Flavorful Tastings?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cartagena can sell out a month out. What should I bring or wear?
+

+
On Outty we rank every Cartagena experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cartagena Antigua & Barrio Getsemani group with audio system, Historic Center & Getsemaní Shared Tour in Cartagena, Cartagena VIP Boat Tour: Rosario Islands & Snorkel. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cartagena?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cartagena?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
