About this experience
Feel the ancestral strength of San Basilio de Palenque, the first free town in South America and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site. On this journey, you will discover the history of the Cimarrones who defied slavery, where alongside Benkos Biohó emerges the voice of Orika, a warrior whose words and courage inspired Palenquero resistance. Among streets filled with art, music, and tradition, you will feel the living heritage of a community that never stopped fighting. (This experience has been with us since 2014 — we were the first to bring foreigners to Palenque.)

A highlight of our stay in Cartagena
For anyone staying in Cartagena I would highly recommend spending a day on this guided visit to San Basilio de Palenque - the centre of Palenque language, culture, music and dance. Orika was our guide for the day and translator. We learnt so much from her, both about Palenque culture and history but also about the relationship between Cartagena and Palenque. We even learnt about the different kinds of local fruit, which we wouldn’t have tried later on, without Orika’s enthusiasm/ knowledge ( our favourite is guama and Orika was right - it’s kind of like candy floss fruit !). At San Basilio de Palenque, Orika introduced us to Viktor, and they jointly spent the day with us taking us to the community dance and music school where the students and teachers gave a stunning performance ; to the music rehearsal rooms of a contemporary Palenque music collective and learning some of the Palenque language itself. There was so much more to the day than I can do justice to in this review. ( street art, medicine, the history of the founding of Palenque….) And so many relaxed, fun and interesting conversations with Viktor and Orika. And we now know the Palenque for “ love” ( Ngongoroko) ! We also wanted to give a mention to the lunch we had as part of the tour. Usually, the food on guided tours can be unremarkable but we had some beautifully cooked / fried local fish in a fresh sauce with rice and fried plantain with a refreshing Agua de Panela to drink. I’d wanted to try Agua de Panela since beginning our travels in Colombia. Many thanks to the cook who made this delicious meal. That’s it (!) - hope this encourages people to take up the opportunity for this experience.
Response from the operator: Simon thank you very much for your review. Yours comments really encourages us to keep going. Come again, we have more to show you. It was great having you.

A tour not to be missed
Our tour guide Eric was very knowledgeable on the history and culture and he seemed to have no problem speaking three languages. The people of Palenque were very warm. I be willing to would go back on the tour for the food alone!

Black history at its finest!
Beat up, hot town with incredible history a long hour from Cartagena. The first runaway slave settlement in all the Americas. Part of Colombian mythology and music. Cute and really simple museum in the middle of town. If i returned, i would contact some of the guides to know when a musical or dance rehearsal was on. Our cabbie Walter 57-310-702 7112 had the guides phone number in Cartagena.

Visit two Countries in one day
The trip to Palenque was a special experience. Hard to imagine that you are in Africa even though you are in Colombia. But this is Palenque, a historic village with a touching history. The tour was well organized and all guides were extremely friendly. I was even introduced to boxing here. Strengthened with a delicious lunch and with many new impressions of the diversity of Colombia, we started our way home. I highly recommend this cultural experience!

The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cartagena.
How much does Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America cost?
+
Prices start at $250 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cartagena usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America take?
+
Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cartagena is not rushed.
Is Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 58 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 11 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cartagena, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cartagena can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cartagena and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Cartagena: full day experience in Palenque: Africa in America start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cartagena within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Cartagena?
+
On Outty we rank every Cartagena experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cartagena Antigua & Barrio Getsemani group with audio system, Historic Center & Getsemaní Shared Tour in Cartagena, Cartagena VIP Boat Tour: Rosario Islands & Snorkel. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cartagena?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cartagena?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
