Your expedition begins with boarding your comfortable covered vessel, complete with a heated cabin and onboard washroom. The 2.5-hour journey to Bute Inlet is a marine wildlife experience in itself, as your expert naturalist guides provide commentary and we keep a lookout for whales, dolphins, and sea lions along the way. Once we arrive at the bear viewing location in the Orford River Valley, you'll enjoy an included lunch on the dock before being greeted by your Indigenous guides from the Homalco First Nation. You'll then board a van to travel along the inlet's rivers, safely observing grizzly bears catching salmon during the annual run from various viewing towers. After approximately 3 hours of bear viewing, you'll return to your boat for the journey home, with more time to spot whales and enjoy the coastal scenery. This tour does include a number of stairs and walking. If you have any concerns about your mobility, please contact us. We require a minimum age of 12 years old.

    Really Disappointing Trip

I had previously joined a whale watching trip with Campbell River in 2025. It was amazing so I was really looking forward to this bear viewing tour! I booked the two night 3 day package for the Bute Inlet, which their office advised me was a tour with beautiful waterfalls, mothers and cubs are often sighted here, and the group would be about 12 people. I called prior to ask because I wasn’t sure which tour to do. The day of the tour I get there and there were no drinks as advertised in the offer and that was fine, but definitely not great for a morning tour. Then turns out there were 24 people on the tour! 10 people actually had to sit outside up on the deck because there were not enough seats inside the vessel. There was no stopping on the 2.5 hour ride to Orford Bay. When we got to the dock, the captain took 4 attempts at trying to park the boat and couldn’t. The naturalist had to be the one to do it. Then they piled us in TWO busses. So 24 people in busses for the bear viewing. They were so loud and clunky. The one opportunity to see a mom and cub - only one bus was allowed to let people off and the other bus stopped behind and was not allowed out. I wrote an email submission through Campbell Rivers site after the tour to ask why so many people on the tour? It seemed exploitative and was not as advertised. I waited a week and received no response. So that is why I decided to leave this review. I had high hopes for this tour, and it’s too bad they couldn’t even respond to me. I would have probably chosen them again for a tour, but I guess the business really doesn’t matter to them.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. As a returning guest who previously enjoyed whale watching with us, your experience matters deeply to us. We sincerely apologize for the delay in our reply (sent to you on October 16th) while we gathered details from our operations team and guides about your day. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify a few details regarding our tour setup: Vessel: Our vessel holds 30 passengers (there were 23 on your tour), with seats both inside and on the upper deck. We limit sales to 24 guests when conditions warrant, and we can add aisle seats to ensure guest comfort. Seats beyond that number are sold specifically as overflow / outdoor seating. Our website clearly states that the group size can be up to 30 passengers. Crew & Vessel Operations: Safety and proper vessel handling are paramount to us. The naturalist on board is a certified boat captain actively working toward higher-level ticket credentials. They worked as a team during the docking process to manage the vessel safely, though we understand how that dynamic may have appeared from a passenger's perspective. Amenities: We apologize for any confusion regarding morning refreshments. We do not indicate anywhere in our marketing materials that beverages are offered prior to departure. Land Tour Operations: Because land transportation and bear viewing corridors are managed under specific local wildlife safety guidelines, bus spacing can sometimes restrict immediate unloading. However, we are actively reviewing this with our partners to ensure better viewing rotation for all guests. We want to ensure our guests always feel valued and heard, and we apologize that your Grizzly Bear Tour fell short of your expectations. We take this feedback seriously and will use it to review our processes in the future.

Nice trip, but not worth the money

The trip was enjoyable, and we saw marine life and bears; however, I did not feel the trip was worth the money when comparing to similar trips done in other locations. I purposely booked this trip because the description mentioned group size is limited to 12, but this was false advertising. There were 24 people on the boat ride with only room for 10 people on the outer deck. We were split into two groups of 12 for the busses to see the bears, but the busses traveled together, and all 24 people were shoved onto small viewing platforms. Our tour was the second weekend in October. We got very lucky with the weather, as it was sunny the whole day. The boat ride to Orford Bay took about 2.5 hours. We saw one whale towards the end of the journey there. Once we arrived on land, the crew distributed hand made lunches including a chicken wrap, granola bar, dried fruits, and two cookies. We were then picked up by Homalco Tours and loaded into busses. The land tour consisted of three stops at viewing platforms with total viewing time of about 2 hours. For each platform we spent about 30 minutes in one spot viewing the bear(s). In total we saw 9 bears, including a mom with three cubs. We stopped on the road once more to view another bear after a guest pointed it out. After the bear viewing, the boat crew handed out warm drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) and a small salmon snack. On the boat ride back to Campbell River, we briefly saw some porpoises, and then stopped for about 15 minutes to view sea lions.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the sunny weather, the handmade lunch, and the fantastic wildlife sightings—9 bears (including a mom with three cubs!), a whale, porpoises, and sea lions make for a memorable day on the water! At the same time, we sincerely apologize for the frustration regarding the group size on the boat and the experience at the viewing platforms. We strive to provide complete transparency in our tour descriptions. We have been trying to find the reference to 12 passengers on our listing, but we have not been able to locate it. We would really appreciate you emailing us to let us know where you saw this so we can update it. We appreciate your honest perspective as it helps us improve.

    Spectacular scenery and wildlife.

We booked two tours, both were rewarding. The crew were knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about their job. The boats were clean snd comfortable. The scenery was stunning and nature did not disappoint showing up through out both of our tours. Our First Nation's guides were willing to answer any questions asked and shared stories of the bears we saw. We were provided with a nice bagged lunch, coffee and tea. As we traveled to our destination if there was marine life in the near by area, the captain would not hesitate to take us to the area to observe. There was always respect shown towards the marine life. I would highly recommend Campbell River Whale and Adventure Tours.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the recommendation! We are so happy that you enjoyed both of your tours as much as you did. Thank you for joining us.

    Great company, highly recommended

We did two tours with Campbell River Whale Watching - the 4 hour whale watching in a covered boat and the bear watching at Bute; they were excellent. What came through from both guides was respect and passion for the animals and the environment. They were keen to share their knowledge and provided insight on both the wildlife and the ecosystem as a whole. Both tours were pure magic - I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this company. The food and snacks were excellent too!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the recommendation! We are so glad you had such a great time on both tours!

Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Vancouver Island.

How much does Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride cost?

    +

Prices start at $633 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Vancouver Island usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Vancouver Island is not rushed.

Is Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 124 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Vancouver Island, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride?

    +

Around 43 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Vancouver Island can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Vancouver Island and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Vancouver Island within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Vancouver Island?

    +

On Outty we rank every Vancouver Island experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Victoria Guided Food and History Tour, Whistler Tour from Vancouver + Sea to Sky Gondola + Shannon Falls, Victoria Whale and Wildlife Cruise. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Vancouver Island?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Vancouver Island?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.

What is included in Campbell River Bute Inlet Grizzly Watching Tour and Boat Ride?

    +

Included: Snacks; Lunch; Surcharges on fuel; On-board restrooms; and Tea and coffee. Not included: Gratuities. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
