Great destination, poor value for money: read carefully before booking

ONE-STAR REVIEW * Disclaimer: this review is about the tour package offered by the activity provider, not Borobudur itself. The temple is magnificent and absolutely worth visiting. After taking this tour, we came to the conclusion that it offers very poor value for money. Unless you specifically want someone else to organise every logistical detail for you, it is remarkably easy to arrange exactly the same experience independently for roughly half the price. The only genuinely private part of this package is the return transfer between your hotel and Borobudur. Once you arrive, the activity provider plays virtually no role in the visit itself other than waiting for you to finish before driving you back. The visit inside Borobudur is the standard public experience with access to the upper levels (not the sunrise or sunset visit), which anyone can book independently through the official Borobudur ticketing service or at the entrance for IDR 455,000 per person. This ticket already includes admission, the mandatory upanat sandals, a bottle of water and a guided group visit led by an official local guide. In practice, everything that happens inside the temple is exactly the same experience available to any independent visitor. The tour operator simply adds a substantial markup without providing any additional value during the visit. As for the transportation, Haidar was excellent. He drove safely, was punctual, friendly and attentive throughout the trip. In fact, he is the reason we are giving this tour one star instead of none. Even so, the overall price remains difficult to justify. Hiring a private driver for several hours (or even a whole day) is considerably cheaper, and using using a ride-hailing service for the journey to and from Borobudur is an even more economical option. In our case, both rides together would have cost around IDR 600,000. To sum up, the tour description gives the impression that the provider plays a much more active role in the experience than it actually does. If you are comfortable arranging your own transport, you will almost certainly enjoy the very same visit for significantly less money. We don't mind paying a premium when the provider genuinely adds value to the experience. What disappointed us was paying a significantly higher amount for what turned out to be nothing more than the standard Borobudur visit with private transportation.

    Perfect Day Trip

We had an incredible time. Borobodur was well worth a visit, and we were so well looked after. Fery our guide picked us up from our hotel and gave us a wonderful history of the area and Borobodur on our drive to the temple. We got through the check-in quickly and easily, and the temple tour as breathtaking. Fery very kindly agreed to extend our tour, so we went to the local monastery and then on to Prambanan and the temple complex on the east of Yogyakarta that afternoon for a small additional fee. He took us round the monastry and temple complex as our personal guide, he was such good fun and answered all our questions. We couldn't recommend him and the tour strongly enough!

    Great experience!

Haidar is a fantastic driver who speaks very good English. He went above and beyond on our trip to Prambanan, even making custom stops for durian and waiting for us during lunch. We felt incredibly lucky to have him as our driver. Highly recommended!

Only the two of us on a Monday...woohoo

Driver was timely and very courteous and turned us over to the local guide for the temple visit. That guide was fantastic! As a woman, I was wrapped in a clean, light cotton sarong for the visit at no charge and while we were issued single use thong style slippers to wear for the climb, my husband and I are old so we had permission to wear our sneakers to avoid trips or falls. No hard shoes, though. It is hot, be prepared with hats, sunscreen, and drink the water they issue. Another old couple came ill prepared, and she suffered heat exhaustion only one level up. Due to the guides pacing, we were able to go all the way up to the stupa. Well done!

Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Yogyakarta.

How much does Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers cost?

    +

Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Yogyakarta usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Yogyakarta is not rushed.

Is Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 78 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 73 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Yogyakarta, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers?

    +

Around 26 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Yogyakarta can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Yogyakarta and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Borobudur 5-hour Tour with Climb up Guarantee and Transfers start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Yogyakarta within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Yogyakarta?

    +

On Outty we rank every Yogyakarta experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Yogyakarta Private Car Hire with Driver, From Surabaya / Malang : Mt Bromo Sunrise - Ijen Blue Fire 2D1N, Borobudur Full Climb Up And Prambanan ALL INCLUSIVE PRIVATE Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Yogyakarta?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Yogyakarta?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
