What you'll see and do

  1. Take a private and malaria-free tour of the southern Karoo semi-desert region in comfort, and begin your day with a pickup from your central Cape Town hotel. When you arrive at the reserve, you'll be greeted by your guide and game ranger, and then you'll board an open-air safari vehicle for your game drive. Learn how the so-called ‘Big Five’ - African elephants, Cape buffaloes, lions, leopards, and rhinos - got their nicknames as you keep your eyes peeled for any sign of them, as well as giraffes, hippos, and other animals. In part due to the abundance of wetlands on the Aquila Game Reserve, birds are a significant part of its appeal. Over 170 species of birds live in the park, including the endangered ‘Aquila’ Black Eagle, which gives the reserve its name. Enjoy the unforgettable experience of being in the company of elephants, lions, rhinos, African buffalo, and leopards at the Aquila Game Reserve.

We received a warm welcome from restaurant when we arrived and I must say the place looked fafabulous and love all the o

While in Cape Town,we booked a day trip to Aquila Game Reserve. It’s just under 2 hours from the city and a perfect option if you’re short on time but still want to experience a real safari. They picked us up early from our hotel, and from that point on, we didn’t have to worry about a thing. When we arrived at the lodge, we were welcomed with a drink, then treated to a delicious buffet lunch (included, and yes, we definitely went back for seconds ). We were out spotting Africa’s Big 5 before noon, and the experience didn’t disappoint. To set the mood, our driver had the ultimate playlist for the ride: Africa, The Lion Sleeps Tonight: (A-wimoweh, a-wimoweh, a-wimoweh, a-wimoweh), Circle of Life, Eye of the Tiger, and Sweet Caroline (BA BA BA). It was the perfect soundtrack to kick off our adventure. If you’re in Cape Town and craving a quick, affordable safari experience without the time or cost of flying to Kruger, Aquila’s half- or full-day tours are a fantastic option. Highly recommend!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a fantastic and detailed review of your day trip to Aquila Game Reserve! We’re thrilled to hear that everything from the hotel pickup to the wildlife sightings and that memorable soundtrack helped make your experience truly special. It’s great to know the buffet lunch hit the spot (seconds are always encouraged!) and that you were able to enjoy the beauty of Africa’s Big 5 without the long travel time. Your mention of the playlist brought a big smile to our faces — nothing sets the tone for a safari adventure like a bit of Circle of Life and Sweet Caroline! 🎶 We’re so glad we could be part of your Cape Town journey and provide a fun, seamless, and unforgettable safari experience. Thank you for the high recommendation — we hope to welcome you back again someday!

Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cape Town.

How much does Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets cost?

+

Prices start at $50 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cape Town usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets take?

+

Plan for about 9 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cape Town is not rushed.

Is Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cape Town, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 9-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cape Town can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cape Town and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Big five Safari, Lunch with Tickets start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cape Town within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cape Town?

+

On Outty we rank every Cape Town experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Penguins Day Tour from Cape Town, Table Mountain, Boulders Penguins and Cape point Day Tour, Wine Tour: Paarl, Franschhoek & Stellenbosch incl 3 wineries. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cape Town?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cape Town?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
