Admire also the temple of Athena Nike, the Propylea, and last but not least the Erechtheon with its beatiful 6 maidens statues. On the slopes of the Acropolis there is probably the oldest theater in the world from 600 BCE and also a Roman odeon used to this day.

Ancient Agora of Athens
Next stop the ancient Agora of Athens. The center of political, financial and social life. A site brought to light by the American school of classical studies. A beatiful site where you can admire probably the most well preserved ancient Greek temple dedicated to Efestos, the blacksmith god that makes all the weapons of the gods, the son of Zeus and Hera. On site there is also a beautiful reconstruction of an ancient 2 storey shopping mall. Today the ground floor houses the museum with the findings of the agora excavation which is still going on. Beautiful pottery, ancient coins, ballots, water clocks and a lot more. Yes, there was a shopping mall with 42 shops 2500 years ago. Apart from that the site has many ruins of goverment buildings, temples, court houses, parliament, theater, statues. Socrates the famous philosopher stepped on this ground. Mostly flat and covered in trees. A must visit site after the Acropolis.

Witness the changing of the president's guards. A ceremony taking place every hour on the hour in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier where we pay respect to all the Greek soldiers lost in battle and their bodies never returned home. Their traditional uniform is full of symbolisms behind them, related to our recent history. A very important thing to see to understand the pride and discipline of the young Greek soldiers doing their duty for 1 year like every other Greek male over 18 years old.

Amazing collection of findings from the Acropolis. Many replicas of artifacts stolen by Europeans few centuries back. Not to be missed while in Athens to have a complete experience of the Acropolis. Full of glass that illuminates the sculptures and also you are able to see the Acropolis high up.

An alternative for the Acropolis museum. The old part of the city on the foothill of the Acropolis. Beatiful historical neighborhood of Athens. Picturesque alleys, nice shops, cafes, restaurants. Good option for lunch also. Always very vibrant day and night.

The absolute best tour of Athens
Out of a 1 to 5 rating, I would rate this a 10. The experience could not have been better. Our tour guide was fantastic. He made the tour flexible and brought us to the best restaurant we visited during our entire vacation. I wish every tour could be this good

Great private tour of Athens. Ask for Alexander!
We were fortunate to have a private tour, just my husband and me, and our guide, Alexander, was absolutely amazing! Pickup at the port of Piraeus was flawless and we felt very well cared for. His knowledge of the history of Athens was incredible. He was also exceptionally energetic, engaging, and thoughtful throughout the day. Alexander made sure we had everything we needed. His transportation was clean, and comfortable, which made the day even more enjoyable. We loved all the sites, the extra history he shared, and our lunch stop at a traditional family restaurant in existence for 100 years. He truly made this experience special, making sure we saw as many of the highlights on our list as possible, including the Acropolis, Pantheon, National Archeologial Museum and several other sites, as well as providing tips for when we are on our own in the coming days. He dropped us (and our bags) at our hotel, which was so appreciated. We can recommend Alexander without hesitation, and wish him continued success!

Customizable tour is the way to go!
The best way to experience Athens is with a customizable tour, an enthusiastic & knowledgeable guide like Alexander who spoke perfect English. Alexander share historical information on every site, Greek mythology and Greek language bits to breakdown words and meaning this giving us greater understanding of what we were about to see. His explanations were ahead of each segment of the tour with illustrations and maps so then we could go at our own pace and enjoy it- live the moment unlike some other tours where the guide was talking the whole time. Also, my wife has mobility issues so he was very attentive and supportive of her needs. Unfortunately, the elevator at the Acropolis wasn’t working due to gusty winds but since we had our own tour, she could take her time going up and that made a huge difference. After seeing the Acropolis, Agora, Temple of Seuss, changing of the guards, panoramic views of the city and taking pics with the Acropolis as a background my wife asked to be dropped off at the hotel. Then Alexander and I proceeded to the beach to enjoy the famous gelato and we finished at the Acropolis museum. It was a stupendous day!!! Oh, We got to experience so much more because Alexander reached out the day before the tour to confirm pick up location, and informed us it was free museum day so we went to the fantastic Anthropology museum!!! Best way to see Athens is with a customizing tour!
Best way to see Athens is with a private tour & with Alexander as your guide. Alexander shared with us a great deal of history & information about the sites, the city and Greek mythology and his picture book help illustrate his narrations. It was so wonderful to have a customized adventure with a tour guide who spoke perfect English and was full of knowledge and enthusiasm for all things Greek. We visited the Acropolis, Agora, temple of Seuss, went up a hill to enjoy the breath taking views of the city & the Acropolis/modern Olympic stadium etc. Enjoyed a traditional lunch away from tourist at our request. Then we dropped off my spouse who for medical reasons wanted to go back to the hotel. Then Alexander and I proceeded near the harbor for ice cream then to Acropolis museum. Alexander was fantastic as he was enthusiastic, engaging and knowledgeable, we were blessed to have him as our guide so we highly recommend him and his company.
