    What you'll see and do

    1. Nollendorfplatz

The tour begins with a warm welcome from your guide, Jeff, a sociologist and certified sex educator. After a brief introduction, you’ll explore Berlin’s long history of nudism (FKK), a movement that promoted body freedom from the 19th century to today. You’ll learn how nudism shaped Berlin’s culture and why it remains a key part of life at the city’s lakes and parks.

      10 minutes here

    2. Berlin was home to the world’s first Institute for Sexual Science, founded by Magnus Hirschfeld, a pioneer in sexology. Here, groundbreaking research on desire, relationships, contraception, and gender identity was conducted. You’ll explore the institute’s key discoveries, including the invention of the rubber condom, early studies on Viagra precursors, and advances in sexual health. Berlin was also the site of the first gender affirmation surgeries, performed on figures like Dora Richter, Lili Elbe, and Karl M. Baer. The Nazis, viewing this research as a threat, destroyed the institute in 1933, erasing what could have been a revolutionary moment in sexual history.

      20 minutes here

    3. Monument to Homosexuals Persecuted Under National Socialist Regime

The rise of the Nazi regime brought a brutal crackdown on sexual freedoms. You’ll learn how the Nazis censored sex, shut down erotic clubs, and outlawed sexual diversity. The Night of the Long Knives, a key moment in Nazi history, saw the execution of Ernst Röhm, a high-ranking Nazi who had been a known homosexual. The persecution extended to LGBTQIA+ individuals, sex workers, and those deemed “degenerate” by the regime. Many were arrested and sent to concentration camps, where they were marked with pink triangles, a symbol that would later be reclaimed by the LGBTQIA+ rights movement.

      10 minutes here

    4. Before the Nazi era, Berlin was infamous for its thriving sex life and diverse nightlife. You’ll walk through locations where prostitution was openly practiced, and where Berlin’s underground fetish and kink culture flourished long before it became mainstream. From exclusive brothels to hidden kinky offers, Berlin was decades ahead of its time in catering to every form of desire.

      15 minutes here

    5. In the early 20th century, Berlin had one of the most thriving lesbian communities in the world. You’ll visit locations tied to this subculture, including the famous Toppkeller, a meeting place for women who defied societal norms. Through stories of Claire Waldoff, a cabaret singer known for her lesbian identity, and the lyrics of the Lavender Song, you’ll get a sense of how music and nightlife were intertwined with queer identity. You’ll also hear about Josephine Baker, the famous Black performer whose time in Berlin was marked by both adoration and racial discrimination.

      10 minutes here

    6. Berlin in the 1920s and early 1930s was a magnet for gay men from across Europe, and no one captured this atmosphere better than Christopher Isherwood. You’ll walk through areas where the author lived and socialized, inspiring his famous works that would later be adapted into Cabaret. His memoirs provide a window into a world of sexual nightlife and freedoms that made Berlin a global beacon before the Nazi rise to power.

      10 minutes here

    7. One of the most famous nightlife spots in 1920s Berlin, the Eldorado Club was a meeting place for drag performers, sexually open individuals, and even high-ranking Nazi officials before their crackdown on “degeneracy.” You’ll hear about the Nazi Ernst Röhm, who was known to frequent the club, and how a journalist from the US magazine Vogue once visited Eldorado and named a drag queen the most beautiful woman in Berlin. The club was a symbol of Berlin’s openness before it was shut down by the Nazis.

      15 minutes here

    8. After WWII, Berlin was divided into East and West, and so was its approach to sexuality. In West Berlin, the sexual revolution took hold, leading to a more open attitude toward relationships, pornography, and alternative lifestyles. In East Berlin, the state took a different approach—while freedom was restricted in many ways, public nudism (FKK) became incredibly popular. You’ll explore how these two competing ideologies shaped Berlin’s sexual culture on both sides of the Wall, why said Wall was referred to as the condom of the GDR, and how a conservative politician saved thousands of lives during the Aids crisis.

      15 minutes here

    9. Today, Berlin is one of the most sexually open cities in the world, home to an unrivaled nightlife scene. You’ll hear about the history of Berghain, the world-famous club known for its strict no-photo policy and hedonistic parties, as well as the KitKat Club, Insomnia, and Lab.Oratory, where electronic music and sexual exploration blend seamlessly. The tour also covers Folsom Europe, the largest fetish festival in the world, which brings thousands of visitors to Berlin each year.

    A great walk around Nollendorfkiez

It was a great and educational tour. Jeff was lovely and super knowledgeable on the topic. It’s shocking to have lived and worked in the neighbourhood for as long as I have and not know the depths of history in these streets. It was so enlightening learn about the history of sex, freedom, and liberation in such an immersive way. The AR and video/archival photos definitely added to the experience. Would definitely recommend

Response from the operator: Thank you — hearing that the tour gave familiar streets a whole new depth means a lot to me, and I’m glad the archival material added something special to it. 🎞️

Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Berlin.

How much does Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom cost?

    +

Prices start at $59 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Berlin usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom take?

    +

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Berlin is not rushed.

Is Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 79 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 53 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Berlin, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom?

    +

Around 19 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Berlin can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Berlin and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Berlin Uncensored: A History of Sex & Freedom start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Berlin within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Berlin?

    +

On Outty we rank every Berlin experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Berlin's Best: 2 Hour Walking Tour Third Reich and the Cold War, Communist East Berlin and Berlin Wall Small Group Walking Tour, Sachsenhausen concentration camp.. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Berlin?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Berlin?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
