Batur Crater to Ubud – Volcano Crater Cycling Adventure

65 km Mount Batur crater to Ubud tour, fantastic!

We had booked the 65 km BATUR CRATER to UBUD tour. It was a great tour, but this long tour is only suitable for experienced riders. We were provided with the Indonesian brand Octagon fullys. Two of them were aluminium with SLX set up and reasonably good Fox suspension, another was a carbon Bike with Fox factory Kashima suspension and SRAM XX01 gear shift. The frame sizes are rather small, so make sure you tell them your body height (we made the mistake of simply ordering L, because this is our standard size) The bikes were in good condition. Make sure to check brakes, tire pressure, air pressure for suspension based on your body weight as well as saddle height. We did not plan on the ride, so we did not have any Bike clothes. You can buy stuff from them, but tell them first. We thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The first 28km leg starts at 1600 meters and goes around the crater, through jungle and down single tracks and finally through a lava field (quite strenuous) to lake Batur at 1000 m. The car will then pick you up and bring you to a nice view point for lunch. We were tracking it with Strava, search for: jN3lYvSkp5b There are several short uphills, some quite steep at 15+%. Total 770 m uphill on the first leg. The second leg (Standard tour, that most tourist make) takes you through many small roads, villages and paths through the jungle as well as a lot of rice paddies. Fantastic ride! Our guides were very experienced and very helpful. Pick up is from hotel and we biked back to our hotel.

Mt batur crater to ubud

Really a super nice route, lots of secret paths where you would never go otherwise. Start of the route is tough (technical and conditional), but after lunch it is doable. Even without / with little mtb experience it is doable (the first kilometers the more experienced will have to wait for you) if you are a bit adventurous and relatively fit.

This was a great day’s riding. Some road but never long before being on trails again. Not too technical but reasonable skills necessary for the first 30km (morning). A few up & downs but no giant climbs. After a great lunch, arvo was mostly downhill / flat. Very scenic & varied, Rudy was an excellent, attentive guide. Meeting the van with cold drinks along the way was appreciated. Bike was brand new, so no problems there. Infinity MTB were excellent & easy to deal with.

undersold as difficult.

First, let me start by saying the guide Ajus did a great job, he was attentive to our needs and made sure we didn't get lost etc. The scenery was great, and it was great go get out of the bustle of Bali. There were refreshing cold drinks + cold fruit available at stops which was most welcome. But i learned that Ajus didn't have a company provided bike, he had to provide his own. this meant on his old Giant, with no dropper post, there was no way he could keep up on the descents. Ajus was saying he couldn't afford a dropper post. Mirroring another riders comments, i just wanted to ride, and ride hard, but it wasn't really possible. The tour is oversold as difficult but it wasn't really hard for an experienced rider at all. The trails are *not* mountain bike trails, they are local trails, so there are no interesting features, like drop-offs etc. definitely the lightest shade of green. Most of the second half of the ride is on paved (but narrow) trails. Also the company prides itself on new polygon bikes, but they really should maintain them. My bike had a loose back brake calliper that nearly came off the bike in the first kilometre. also my bike's suspension bearings were worn out, causing the bike to shift under hard load which was very frustrating. Ajus had a mechanical at the end, and couldn't ride his bike up hills. The last km of the ride was through peak hour traffic in Ubud - some riders, not used to riding in congested traffic would be pretty intimidated by this, especially those not used to asian traffic. So Infinity, provide your hard working staff a company-provided bikes, and maintain your fleet.

Response from the operator: Hi there, First of all, please send us an email with your name as its always nice that we can verify the date and ride and name of the crew that was on the tour with you. For sure we can understand where your feedback comes from. This ride is a 'fun ride'. There is nothing extreme to it. We use to label this ride as easy/intermediate and in the 10 years, we are running our tours most accidents happened on this ride. We got feedback from some guest that we should label this ride harder and we should have warned them better. Our point of all of this is, it's impossible for us to say how easy - or hard - or rides really are if we have not seen our guest riding yet. We gladly invite you then on our 'Secret Single Track' and 'Bali Downhill' rides. These are both harder and some people would say more 'fun' or 'interesting' again to each his own. We also have different guides guiding these last two rides, some of them competing in the Asia Enduro Championships. They can go fast if that's what you are looking for.  We gladly invite you on a day out with one of our advanced guides on one of our more advanced trails if you are still in Bali. And if you have left already, then our offer stands whenever you make it back to our magical island. I would like to add a few things though about your comments regarding providing bikes for our guides and taking care of our guides. We actually do! Guides have the choice in premium payment and providing their own bike, or we provide a bike for them and charge them a very small fee for that. 140 bike tour companies in Bali and we pay our guides the highest of everyone! Ajus has 4 bikes - including a Giant Reign with a dropper post, a carbon Cervello road bike, and 2 older hardtail bikes, yes he made a mistake and was using his old Giant hardtail bike, but I think some things got 'lost in translation' by him not being able to afford a dropper post ;-) Also, the new Polygon bikes are now so capable that yes our guides should use the same bikes as well. That's an important lesson learned from your feedback! Regarding your comments about our bikes. We have a whole new fleet of bikes since last week.
