An excellent, efficient way to see these two important sites

I had a great tour of the salt mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau with Choose Cracow, led by our driver, Petar. First, communication was great. I was contacted via WhatsApp the day before with instructions on where and when to meet (just a block from my hotel). I recommend ordering the lunch option from Choose Cracow. It ended up being about a 12-hour day, from pickup at ~8:30 a.m. to dropoff around 8:30 p.m. There is not much time to stop and buy a lunch. The lunch option is not expensive, and I was grateful to have that lunch waiting for me after the salt mine tour to eat during the 80-minute drive from the salt mine to Auschwitz. You will have a short amount of time at the salt mine to purchase a snack, but the lines for the snack bar can be long. If you don't purchase the lunch option, I recommend bringing your own sack lunch. Keep in mind that what you are purchasing, in my opinion, is one-stop logistical support. You could go to the salt mine and Auschwitz by public transportation on your own, but I found this tour a good value because they handled everything. I was picked up in a clean, newer, comfortable bus, led straight to my tour guide at the (stunning, absolutely worth it) salt time, given lunch (because I'd purchased that option), driven to the Auschwitz museum site, led straight to my tour guide there, driven to the Birkenau site and met by the same tour guide, and delivered back to within a block of my hotel. (They generally pick up at your hotel, but my hotel was in an area where it's more difficult for buses--this was totally fine.) Also note that you're getting a driver, not necessarily a guide. Our driver Petar was friendly and gave us all of the information we needed, though he is not the guide at the sites. The salt mine provides its own guides and Auschwitz-Birkenau provides its own guides; Petar made sure we were led straight to our guides and promptly ushered in. Finally, we had plenty of time at Auschwitz-Birkenau. I've read reviews of other tours where people express concern that they won't (or didn't) have sufficient time to explore the camps, but the tour is led by guides provided by the museum, not Choose Cracow, so the tours take as long the museum and provided tour guide want them to. We were never rushed, and our guide was sincere, thorough, and thoughtful as we spent approximately three hours with the same guide learning and exploring both camps. I think perhaps some worry that they won't have time, for example, to visit the shop or use a restroom, but there was sufficient time for both. We had plenty of bathroom breaks (we took Petar's advice to use the bathroom inside the gate at Birkenau, because there's a 5 ZLT charge (~$1.25) for the one in the parking lot). As for shopping, the shop at Auschwitz is focused on education and sells almost exclusively books. I was grateful for the prompt and clear communication and coordination and found this tour a great value. I would book again.

Response from the operator: Many thanks for your extended and very helpful review with description of the whole day that was a pleasure to organise for you :) special thanks from your driver/tour leader Peter!

    An incredible day

This was an amazing excursion. In retrospect it was too much for us in one day but it was a day to remember. The Salt Mines are spectacular (a great deal of walking both up and down!). Auschwitz and Birkenau are places which I feel we should all visit in the hopes that this atrocity will never happen again and to pay our respects to all the millions of people who suffered there. The guides are extremely empathetic and informative and we came away so very humbled.

Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Krakow.

How much does Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation cost?

    +

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Krakow usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation take?

    +

Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Krakow is not rushed.

Is Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Krakow, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Krakow can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Krakow and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Auschwitz-Birkenau and Salt Mine with private transportation start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Krakow within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Krakow?

    +

On Outty we rank every Krakow experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Complete Cracow Bike Tour (small group of maximum 15 people!), Krakow–Zakopane: Cable Car, Chocholow Baths, Cheese & Vodka, Krakow: Zakopane & Hot Springs Tour with Cable Car (Hotel Pickup). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Krakow?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Krakow?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
