Great experience, incredible guides
Horseback riding through the rivers and around the waterfalls near Arenal was truly serene, and we even got to see sloths and toucans along the way! Our guides, Miguel y Jorge, were incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and always making sure we felt safe and comfortable. Even if you’ve had a little too much tequila the night before, these two will take good care of you! There were six friends in our group with both guides, which felt like the perfect size for the experience. The horses were calm and sure-footed, confidently navigating even the rocky stretches like they had their own internal GPS. We’d absolutely recommend this experience and would gladly come back with more friends! ¡Pura vida!

Horse back riding and zip lining! What a day!
This was such a fun adventure, and I highly recommend doing the bundled zipline and horseback-riding tours! I had never been ziplining before, and our instructor was fantastic. He gave us a demonstration and made sure everyone understood what to do. I was surprisingly not scared at all! We even briefly spotted a sloth in a tree about 10 feet away while ziplining, which was such a cool experience. The ziplines weren’t as high up as I had imagined they would be, but the views were absolutely breathtaking. The first three zip lines were my favorite, and there was a guide on each platform to help us transition to the next line. I brought my phone on a lanyard, which I definitely recommend if you want to take your phone with you. They told us that phones are one of the most commonly lost items people bring, so having it securely attached to something is important. We eventually rappelled down to the river, where we got some great photos. We opted for the $15 USD photo package. There were definitely some pretty terrible photos mixed in, but there were also several really good ones that we were happy to have. After rappelling down, we walked through the river for a short distance, which left our shoes soaking wet. We then went upstairs, where there was a bathroom, before continuing on to the cultural experience. The cultural experience was probably my least favorite part. It felt somewhat performative, and I didn’t feel like I learned very much. It was only about 10 minutes and felt more like a presentation/show featuring beautiful masks that were available for purchase. There was about an hour and a half between the ziplining and horseback riding, so we drove to a local soda called Soda Monkey House, which was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it. They had a bull that you could pet, as well as horses, and there was even a two-week-old baby horse when we visited! The family running it was incredibly nice and welcoming. Horseback Riding Later in the day, we went horseback riding, and this was hilarious and so much fun. We took the river path because we were there during rainy season, so the mountain trail was mostly cloudy. The guides were extremely helpful. They taught us the horses’ names and explained what to do when going uphill and downhill. The horses were well trained but had big personalities. I rode Maya, who naturally liked to stay in the middle of the group. My friend rode Dora, who preferred staying toward the back. If you want to ride alongside a specific person, I would recommend asking the guides ahead of time to put you on horses that naturally prefer staying near each other. It was difficult to get Maya to stay toward the back because she really wanted to remain in the middle of the group. The guides helped us get some fantastic photos in front of the waterfall and even held my jacket for me while we took them. When we went through the river, the water came up to about my ankles, which actually felt amazing in the heat. We spent quite a bit of time trotting and didn’t canter until we went uphill. I have some experience riding horses, but honestly, Maya was so connected to the guides that she knew exactly what to do and when to do it. She basically seemed to be telling me, “Just let me do my job.” 😂 I definitely recommend wearing pants that cover your legs because the saddles can cause some chafing. One thing I especially appreciated happened when my friend accidentally dropped her jacket, which had our rental car keys inside. She didn’t realize she had dropped it, but one of the guides found it and brought it back to her. We would have been in BIG trouble without those keys, so I am incredibly grateful that he noticed and returned them. We even saw a sloth while horseback riding! Overall, I highly recommend the bundled tours. They were a great way to spend the day, and my friend—who had never ridden a horse before—said horseback riding was her favorite activity of our entire two-week Costa Rica trip! Thanks for such a great time!

Not recommended for people who know how to ride
Our Tavel agent had booked this as a 2 hour horseback ride with a bilingual naturalist . This was a one hour "ride" on a mostly out and back course on the los Lagos estate and local road - very little nature - and no naturalist guide. The main guide Donald was very unfriendly , dismissive and more interested in how he looked on his stallion with its head tied down so severely. He wanted you to not participate as a rider on the horse at all - rather his mission was to drive the horses with their passengers as a herd of cattle to the top and back with utterly no regard for how this would bump riders and horses together . Maybe fun for those with no experience ( but actually not very safe) and not fun if you actually can and want to ride your horse . Disappointing.

Amazing time!
Jorge was an amazing tour guide! We got to have a personal tour when we visited and it was awesome! The horses were very sweet and the views were cool too. Thank you Jorge for a great few hours, it was great getting to know you! -Emma and Anthony :)

Felt Unsafe and Dismissed by Staff
I would not recommend this horseback riding tour based on my experience. It was not only disappointing, but also felt unsafe. During the ride, the horse I was assigned actually fell, which was very concerning. Then, toward the end of the tour, another horse bit me on the knee. These are not minor issues—this raises serious concerns about how the horses are managed and the overall safety of the experience. What made the situation even more frustrating was the response from the front desk. When I reported what happened, I was told that “it’s a risk people take when they book the tour.” That response felt dismissive and unprofessional. While I understand that some level of risk can exist, guests should still expect proper safety measures and a team that takes incidents seriously. Overall, I left feeling disappointed and concerned. If you’re considering this tour, I would strongly suggest thinking twice and being aware of the potential risks.
