    What you'll see and do

    1. Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails

This is definitely the top birding spot in Arenal area. The lodge is located in a beautiful property on the base of the Arenal Volcano and Cerro Chato. It has several trails to walk along the property, special to find many species of birds, many of them uncommon to find in the area. Besides that, there is a very nice observatory deck where you can see tons of birds coming to the feeders. Also, there are beautiful gardens where normally you will see a lot of different hummingbirds species visiting the flowers.

    Arenal birding experience

Has a wonderful time exploring with Gustavo. Saw way more variety of animals than imagined. Would book again in a heartbeat! Thanks again!

    Outstanding bird guide

I've worked with 11 birding guides so far and Tavo Rojas is easily one of the best! He was the most attentive to my target list, of all the guides on my recent trip. He kept referring back to my list as we found one target after another. He was very quick to spot birds and also very skilled at helping me find the best vantage point for a photo. There were also many times during my two days with him where I would have given up on a bird, but he persisted and through his skill and patience we were able to get excellent views. He is flexible and always keeps the client's needs in mind. I had a very productive two days of birding with Tavo of Great Wings, in the Arenal area. I highly recommend birding with Tavo, and I would not hesitate to book with him again.

Amazing bird guides for serious birders!

My wife and I did two days of birding with Gustavo, first at Arenal Observatory and then at the Bogarin trail. We are avid birders and natural history lovers and couldn’t have asked for a better guide than Gustavo. His knowledge of the birds by call and sight was just amazing - we can’t believe how many species we saw owing to his skill and experience. Not only did he know birds but answered all our random questions about the ecosystem and the area. He is also passionate and just a great person to spend time with. We plan to contact him again for future trips in Costa Rica.

    Fantastic Personalized Birding Experience

Tavo is an amazing guide, truly knowledgeable about local birds by both sight and sound. Within the first two hours of the tour, I was able to identify 20 different bird species thanks to his expertise. He is patient, thoughtful, and very considerate of his guests. If you’re looking for a personal birding guide in the La Fortuna area, look no further. Thank you, Tavo, for an unforgettable experience!

Highly enjoyable private tour with Luis

We spent the morning at the Arenal Observatory on a private tour with Luis, an excellent guide who was knowledgable about the local birds and where to spot them away from feeding stations. A terrific experience at a very fair price.

La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for La Fortuna.

How much does La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography cost?

    +

Prices start at $133 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in La Fortuna usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in La Fortuna is not rushed.

Is La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 18 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in La Fortuna, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book La Fortuna Half day Birdwatching and Photography?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in La Fortuna?

    +

On Outty we rank every La Fortuna experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Upper Balsa River White Water Rafting Class 3/4 in Costa Rica, White Water Rafting Class II and III, Authentic Coffee and Chocolate Tour at North Fields. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in La Fortuna?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
