Don’t walk, run to book your tour with Michael! He is truly one of the best tour guides that we have ever had and made our Kyoto experience so much more memorable. As a former teacher, he knows how to tell stories in a way that connect with both adults and children (we have two teenagers). Michael knows all of the hidden gems to visit - spots that are so cool but not crowded with other tourists. His stories are really interesting (not just what you read on Wikipedia) and he is willing to answer any and all questions honestly! You will not regret booking a tour with Michael! -Lauren

    4. Hokyoin

Our Arashiyama Kyoto walking tour continues to Hōkyō-in Temple — a quiet, off-the-beaten-path Zen sanctuary rarely included on standard Arashiyama tours. While most visitors explore the famous landmarks, we step into a secluded space that preserves one of the most unexpected and deeply human stories of Japan’s medieval warrior era. Beneath its understated grounds lies a burial that reshapes how we understand loyalty, rivalry, and respect — a story few travelers ever hear without a guide who knows where to look.

    5. Seiryoji Temple

Our journey concludes at Seiryō-ji Temple in Arashiyama, home to one of Kyoto’s most sacred and historically significant Buddhist images. While many visitors admire its impressive main hall and move on, this temple preserves a story that connects imperial devotion, international exchange, and centuries of quiet faith. It’s the kind of place where the surface is beautiful — but the deeper meaning only reveals itself when you understand what you’re truly standing in front of.

    A must do in Kyoto!

We were referred to Mike by our friends as the must thing to do in Kyoto. They were right! Mike was so knowledgeable and friendly. It felt like we were hanging with a friend. Mike knew exactly where to go to see amazing sites and to avoid the crazy crowds that you experience across Kyoto. It was exactly what we needed after doing some very crowded tours earlier in our trip. If you want to see incredible sites, learn about the history of Japan and avoid the big crowds this is the tour to do. We will be telling everyone about this tour and it’s one we will never forget.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the kind words, Alex! I'm glad to know that you enjoyed the morning away from the crowds as much as I did! Kind regards, Michael

Get Michael for a guided tour of Kyoto!

One might think that a guy originally from Nebraska giving a tour In Kyoto may not provide the best guided walking experience. One would be wrong in this case. Michael is an excellent guide. He has taught social studies in Japan for a number of years and he exudes joy in sharing his knowledge of the local culture to tourists like us. He's a natural teacher, funny, informative and is able to relay history clearly to our group which includes a wide age range. He'll be able to show you places and tell stories that you will not know on your own. If you are at all interested in getting a guided tour of Kyoto, book with Michael. You're welcome!

Response from the operator: Sofia, Thank you so much for these kind words! I had a great time showing you and your family around! I hope you enjoyed the rest of you and yours enjoyed the destinations after you visited Kyoto! Sincerely, Michael

    Great Tour

Our guide was Caleb and there was another guide in training with us. The girl who was in training was in total awe of Caleb his knowledge of history, tradition and the Japanese culture was astounding. So in between seeing the shrines and Forest we were truly educated. Highly recommend.
