Misleading Description, Mandatory Water Fights, and a Poor Transfer Experience
The main problem with this tour was that the activity description did not match what actually happened, and the tour operator bears primary responsibility for this. I will first explain what the listing led us to expect, then describe the actual content of the tour and what we were not prepared for, and finally comment on several other significant problems. The TripAdvisor listing, as it appeared when we booked, described a nature excursion with visits to local villages. It stated that this was a private tour with an emphasis on comfort. Most of the photos showed calm jeep rides: people were nicely dressed, dry, and smiling. A few photos showed people spraying water at each other, but this looked like an occasional moment rather than a central part of the entire tour. There were also photos of jeeps driving through water, but nothing beyond that. One photo showed people having lunch by the waterfall. Swimming at one of the stops appeared to be optional. I also asked via WhatsApp what we should wear. I was told to wear light clothing and bring shoes. Based on the description, the photos, and the information provided through WhatsApp, we expected a genuinely private, comfortable, family-oriented tour. What we actually experienced was completely different. When we arrived at the starting point, we saw approximately 80 people wearing swimsuits, flip-flops, or very light clothing. Roughly half of them had bought large water guns. An instructor then appeared and explained the program: “The tour consists of five stages. First, we drive and shoot water at each other. Then this turns into a water fight during a stop. After that, we drive to the waterfall and swim. We then return to the starting point for lunch. After lunch, we go swimming again. At the end, we visit a village. Please do not spray people who are not spraying you or who do not have a water gun. You have a couple of minutes to change clothes.” At that point, we began to question what exactly we had paid approximately €200 for three people for. We approached the guides and explained that we were not prepared to get wet and had expected a comfortable, private family tour. The guides appeared surprised. We asked to cancel our participation and requested transportation back to our hotel, but they refused. We did not have any spare clothes. The guides suggested that we buy swimsuits from them, and they gave us a plastic bag for the briefcase containing our documents. They repeatedly tried to persuade us to continue. They assured us that they would somehow protect us and that other participants would not spray us. We decided to try, hoping that the experience might not be as bad as it sounded. As soon as we left the starting point, the guides themselves completely soaked us using a large hose. After that, participants began spraying water at each other while the jeeps were moving. I repeatedly gestured that we did not want to be sprayed, but most people ignored this. Only a small number of participants respected our request. We then stopped for the organized “water war.” Once again, none of the guides warned or protected us. We were sprayed from every direction. By that point, my family was extremely distressed. I went to speak to the guides again. I asked them to end the tour for us and take us back to the hotel because the actual activity did not correspond to what had been advertised. They still refused. Their proposal was that they would take us to the waterfall, then return for lunch, and afterward leave us in the restaurant until the evening. We would then have to return to the hotel using the original transfer. They said that they would not pay for a separate transfer. We would have to arrange and pay €100 for it ourselves. Despite all my objections and the discussions that followed, our jeep continued to be driven in a position where passengers in other jeeps could spray us. It could simply have been placed at the back of the convoy to reduce the problem, but this was not done. When we returned for lunch, I messaged the tour operator and said that I needed to speak with him. He did not respond until the evening. One of the guides then attempted to calm the situation. However, because our request to leave had still not been fulfilled, I said that I would have to write a negative review describing what had happened. The guide responded that he could create problems for me. I understood this statement as a threat. When I asked him what he meant, he refused to explain. This made us feel unsafe, especially because the operator and guides knew the address of our apartment hotel and our room number. We then remained at the restaurant while all the other participants left. Another, more accommodating guide arranged tea, water, and some sweets for us. We gradually calmed down and dried off, although by that point we were covered in dust and dirt. We walked around the beautiful surrounding countryside and looked at the local plants and scenery. Approximately two hours later, all the jeeps returned. We then boarded the shared transfer vehicle and were finally taken back to our hotel. +++ A few words about the transfer and the duration of the tour. We specifically selected what was advertised as a half-day tour. The listing stated that the activity lasted six hours. In reality, the journey from our hotel to the starting point alone took approximately two and a half hours, and this time was not included in the advertised six-hour duration. After arriving, we waited at least another 30 minutes for the safari to begin. There were also not enough seats in the transfer vehicle. A large family traveling with us had booked 15 places, but only approximately 10 seats were available for them. As a result, they had to hold fairly grown children on their laps. During the return journey, the shortage of seats caused a conflict between some of the safari participants. However, the underlying problem was that the tour operator had not provided enough seats for the number of passengers booked on the transfer. +++ The listing also contained misleading photographs. At a minimum, we did not have lunch by the waterfall, despite a photograph that appeared to show this experience. That image created a false impression of what was actually included in the tour. +++ To summarize, the tour description was misleading and did not fully disclose the actual content of the activity. This caused considerable stress and discomfort for my family. Judging by their clothing and preparation, many of the other participants appeared to have received clearer information from the companies through which they booked. After this experience, the tour description reads like generic AI-generated marketing slop rather than an accurate account of the activity actually being sold. Our tour operator also provided extremely delayed communication and a very poor transfer arrangement. Most of the guides were probably not responsible for the inaccurate or incomplete booking description. Some of them did try to improve the mood and calm the situation. However, the conduct of the guide who said that he could create problems for me was unacceptable. Unfortunately, by the time we learned the true nature of the tour, we were no longer able to receive a refund or return to the hotel. We spent almost the entire day there, experienced considerable stress, and had our clothes and belongings soaked and covered in dirt. The tour itself may be enjoyable for people who knowingly want a large group safari centered around water fights and swimming. However, it was not suitable for us, and it was not the private, comfortable family experience that we believed we had purchased.
Response from the operator: Dear guest, based on our investigations, I feel the need to make a statement. As a local travel agency, we believe we have fulfilled everything written in the tour package, including transfers. We didn't just start this business today. The problem is related to what you imagined, outside of our tour package. Firstly, we didn't write that this tour was private; you imagined that. Secondly, the amount you paid, around 170, for three people, wouldn't even cover the fuel for the jeeps. Fourthly, this money isn't entirely the responsibility of the agency providing the service; VIATOR's commission is also included. It's not right to place all the blame on the local agency. You're going on a jeep safari tour, and imagining these jeeps in suits is a mistake in itself. We are here to provide a good time and entertainment for people. In short, you are upset by the difference between what you imagined, what we wrote in the tour package, and the services we provided. Have a good holiday. For future tours, please book privately, just for yourself.
