Colosseum
The Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheater) is still the largest amphitheater in the world today, it was commissioned by the emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian who to build it chose the area between the Palatine, Esquiline and Celian hills, previously occupied by the artificial lake of the Domus Aurea of Nero. Its construction began in 70 AD. and ended in 80 AD. under the empire of Titus, son of Vespasian. The building, intended for fights, games between gladiators (munera), simulations of hunting ferocious and exotic animals (venationes) and naumachie (naval combats), is composed of four overlapping architectural orders; the first three are made up of eighty arches framed by semi-columns, the fourth is divided into panels interspersed with windows. In the last order, masonry and wooden supports were inserted to support an immense tarpaulin (velarium) which served to shelter spectators from the sun and rain.

Excellent Tour, Wonderful Guide!
We had the most wonderful tour with Giulio! He did an excellent job explaining all of the sites and history, and did a great job customizing our tour to allow my parents, who both have mobility issues, to see as much as possible while adjusting to their pace and needs. Excellent tour, recommended. Thank you Giulio!

Poor Performance from Welcome Italy
We had an extremely disappointing experience with Welcome Italy on the Ancient Rome and Colosseum Half Day Private Tour with the added Vatican and Sistine Chapel visit. From the start, the experience was disorganized and poorly communicated. There was no clear confirmation of ticketing or expectations, and despite reaching out multiple times, we did not receive basic meeting details until the evening before the tour, which is unacceptable customer service. The first portion of the tour at the Colosseum was fine. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared decent information. While it was pouring rain, that was not the issue and actually helped with crowd size. The major problems began between tours. We were told lunch was included, only to be dropped at a tourist trap restaurant where nothing was included and we had to pay the full bill. This was never explained clearly in advance. Had we known, we would have chosen a different restaurant nearby that was far better. The transition to the Vatican tour was chaotic and frustrating. Our first guide told us the second guide would meet us around 2, yet no one arrived until 3:30. On top of that, the tour was marketed as fast pass entry to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, which was simply not true. We were given standard general admission tickets and forced to wait in a very long line, which felt misleading at best. While the Vatican guide himself was fine, there was very little communication around timing or expectations. Because of the long delays and slow pacing, the tour ran far longer than anticipated and eliminated any chance of additional sightseeing afterward since it was already dark. Overall, this experience felt like false advertising combined with extremely poor coordination and communication. Expectations were completely mismanaged, and for the price and reputation of this company, the quality delivered was very disappointing. I would not recommend booking with this tour company.
Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are glad to hear that you found the Colosseum guide knowledgeable and that the Vatican guide was fine. We would like to clarify a few important points regarding your experience. First, lunch is not included in this tour, as clearly stated on our website https://www.welcome-italy.it/rome-day-tour-colosseum-vatican-museum-and-sistine-chapel/ The restaurant you mention is simply the designated meeting point between the morning and afternoon tours—guests are never required to eat there, and they are free to choose any nearby option. Our staff always provides guidance and suggestions but does not force anyone to dine at a specific location. Regarding the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, even with skip the line tickets, long queues and delays are entirely controlled by the Vatican itself. These factors are outside our control, and our guides always do their best to manage timing and ensure the visit is as smooth as possible. Our guides and drivers work hard to provide a professional, organized, and enjoyable experience. We always aim to communicate clearly and assist guests throughout the day. Unfortunately, some circumstances, such as Vatican security procedures or timing between locations, cannot be fully predicted or avoided. We appreciate your feedback, but we also want to emphasize that our staff performed their roles professionally, providing knowledge, guidance, and support during a complex full-day tour.

Why this scores 53
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.
How much does Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $128 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.
Is Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 53 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.2/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Ancient Rome and Colosseum: Half Day Private Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Rome?
+
Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Rome?
+
April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Rome?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
