Authentic Delicious & Full of Culture

I had an incredible experience on this African food tasting tour in Johannesburg. From start to finish, the tour was well organized, informative, and delicious. My guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about sharing the rich history and cultural significance behind each dish. I appreciated how the tour went beyond simply tasting food—it provided a deeper understanding of South Africa’s diverse cultures and traditions. Every stop offered something unique, and I enjoyed trying foods I might never have discovered on my own. The portions were generous, the venues were welcoming, and the variety of flavors was outstanding. This tour was one of the highlights of my trip to South Africa. If you want an authentic experience that combines food, culture, history, and local insights, I highly recommend it. Thank you for creating such a memorable and meaningful experience!

Response from the operator: We are super excited for the return trip and we glad…you had an amazing time down here in Johannesburg and thank you again for Trusting Roots of Africa ,We really appreciate the support 🙏🏽

    A mixed bag

Really nice guys who ran this. Good conversation and a fun way to get to experience a variety of African foods. I enjoyed the evening. However, it was two hours, not three and was overpriced. Worst, the ad said "transportation back to your hotel is on us" and I was told to get my own Uber at the end.

Response from the operator: Thank you for the follow-up and for sharing your experience. We’d like to clarify and address your concerns respectfully. The experience is designed to be three hours, and we move through the tour based on guest comfort, engagement, and natural dining time at each stop. If the experience felt shorter than expected or closer to two hours on the day, we sincerely apologize if this felt undervalued. Our approach prioritizes comfort and enjoyment rather than rushing guests through locations. Regarding transportation and additional costs, all inclusions and exclusions are clearly stated in the tour description, and this is communicated with guests prior to the experience starting. Transportation during the tour is included, while transport before or after the experience is not. We also maintain open communication before and during the tour, and if anything does not meet a guest’s expectations or standards, we actively engage to ensure concerns are addressed and guests are comfortable throughout the experience. Based on feedback from our other reviews, we have not experienced ongoing concerns regarding pricing, with most guests finding the experience fairly priced and well structured. Again we apologies for not meeting your expectation We appreciate your feedback and remain committed to clear communication and delivering experiences as described.

I would recommend this to anyone!

Charles and Mboi were awesome. They made us comfortable from the beginning. They seem very knowledgeable about the local area and told us a little bit of African history at every stop . The food stop were wonderful and all delicious. Our favorite was the last stop, the South African cuisine. This was a very gritty and down to earth tour. Most importantly we felt safe the entire time

African Food Tasting Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.

How much does African Food Tasting Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $77 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does African Food Tasting Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.

Is African Food Tasting Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule African Food Tasting Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is African Food Tasting Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book African Food Tasting Tour?

    +

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does African Food Tasting Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?

    +

On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Ultimate Johannesburg Soweto Experience with Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg and Soweto tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Johannesburg?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
