Could and should have been better
Overall we felt this was not time or money well spent and we left disappointed. A little context, the museum is largely made up of 3 floors of exhibits / exhibition material - that is Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. However, when we visited, Level 4 was closed as they were redoing it from 27 July to 26 Sept 2026 and that probably says it all really. What an awful time to redo a whole floor - the height of summer - it’s got to be the period you expect to get the most footfall. On the other 2 floors - there was largely niche stuff to see - dominated by old pre-1980’s content. But the 1980’s through to current day was badly under represented. Horrendous really - so many great movies and fantastic content that could have been covered. Level 5 had a terrace, that was the highlight - a great view.. Also, on the plus side - staff were helpful… AND…the air conditioning was amazing (it was 38c outside).

Hollywoodland and Marilyn Monroe
Highlights were Hollywoodland and Marilyn Monroe. The Barbie exhibitions was okay but a full scale Barbie set would have been cool to see. I was unfamiliar with Bong Joon Ho and Ponyo and these were less appealing. The price was on point for what was on display. I went outside to the Dolby Family Terrace to see the Hollywood sign (as suggested on entry) but it is so far away you almost need binoculars. Overall, it is worth a visit and at least does not cost too much.

Fun to visit
We really enjoyed visiting that museum. Make sure to check which exhibit is currently open. The exhibit that was open during our visit was beauty and the beast and Barbie that was fantastic. We also learned a lot about Marilyn Monroe‘s life.

Overall good experience - mediocre choice in a city of many options.
Good experience overall. $25 per person is a good price overall - interesting memorabilia and information throughout. Not too overcrowded and enough space to get around all of the exhibitions. We spent around half an hour here as some of the floors were closed and it wasn’t the most interactive experience but that may be a personal preference for a museum of this kind. I would recommend if interested in the history of the academy awards and the industry, but would not make a special effort to head here if pressed for time in the LA area.

Hold a Real Academy Award and Go Home with the Receipts to Prove It! The most fun part of the visit to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is the add-on to the ticket price (I think it was $15) to a visit to a little gallery where they will film you holding a real Academy Award statuette and "giving your Oscar speech" to the crowd. They will send you the film via email. This is the most fun I've had in a while. The museum is also terrific for photo ops in general - you can pose in the pink Barbie car, or you can sit behind the desk from The Godfather movies, or you can languish at the beach from the Jaws movie, and on... There's lots to see and learn about the movies, and if your feet wear out, there's a gallery on the main floor with comfy couches and a large screen with a film continuously looping that shows famous moments from the Academy Awards ceremonies. Or, as another top tip: you can also sit up on the rooftop level. Even if your feet are holding up just fine, it's worth it to walk up there and traverse the large seating space toward the railing. You'll see the famous Hollywood sign in the distance (see photo). Ticket prices are reasonable. You can purchase tickets when you arrive. We parked in the nearby structure that also is utilized for the La Brea Tar Pits and the LaCMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). So, depending on how much time you have, you can park once and go to several places of interest. We probably spent three hours at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and I am very glad we went here.
