About this experience

A one-day journey from Baku to the Shahdag Mountain Resort and the Candy Cane Mountains reveals the most striking landscapes of northern Azerbaijan. The Greater Caucasus reaches elevations exceeding 2,500 meters, creating subalpine and alpine climatic zones with crisp, low-humidity air and clear visibility. Shahdag offers expansive ski terrain alongside a range of high-altitude activities, including cable car rides, zip-lining, paragliding and ice skating, all set within a dramatic mountainous environment. The route continues toward the Candy Cane Mountains, a unique geological formation recognized for its vividly striped sedimentary layers. These multicolored strata, primarily composed of iron oxide-rich claystones and siltstones, reflect mineral oxidation processes that occurred over millions of years. The journey concludes with a return to Baku, following an extensive observation of Azerbaijan’s most extraordinary highland and geomorphological features.

  2. Candy Cane Mountain

After completing the tour activities in Shahdag, the journey continues toward the Candy Cane Mountains located in the Khizi region. The driving distance from Shahdag to this destination is 3 hours. The Candy Cane Mountains are a distinctive geological formation, celebrated for their vividly colored, ribbon-like strata of red, white and pink rock that create a striking resemblance to swirling candy patterns. This unique topography results from natural sedimentary layering and mineral oxidation over millions of years, forming one of Azerbaijan’s most photogenic landscapes. Guests typically spend about 30 minutes at the site, accompanied by their private guide for interpretive explanations and a short walk across the mountain slopes to observe the terrain up close. Following the visit, the tour concludes with the return journey to Baku, which takes around 90 minutes to reach the city center.

Is A Private Day Tour to Shahdag and Candy Cane Mountains worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Baku, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

How far in advance should I book A Private Day Tour to Shahdag and Candy Cane Mountains?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Baku can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Baku and add a light layer if any part of the 9-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Baku within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Baku?

+

On Outty we rank every Baku experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include BEST Gobustan, Volcanoes & Absheron Fire Tour (Group or Private), Gobustan and Absheron tour, Old and Modern Baku Tour ( Day & Night Time). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Baku?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Baku?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
