AMAZING NORTH SCOTLAND TRIP!!

Amazing, every day was great!! Terrific places chosen to visit and explore. Had a terrific small van holding only 8 people and a wonderful driver, who knew a lot and got us from a to b safely and on time. We quickly developed into a family, thanks to our driver Richie who was so helpful. So many things were seen and done, I can’t think of a better way to see northern Scotland. They also arranged our hotels/accommodation at night, and they did a great job of that as well.

Great time on the Orkney Islands

The Orkney Islands are breathtaking and inspiring. Our tour guide, John Mccrae was a gem! His knowledge, attitude, flexibility and general cheer contributed to our wonderful experience. We could not have asked for anyone better. We all gained a great deal of knowledge of your country’s history, traditions, and geography. We visited many places that were not necessarily on the itinerary but added value to each day. We were lucky to have very mild and lovely weather and took full advantage. In addition to the scheduled stops, don't miss the Orkney Island Brewery if you're a beer lover. And also of note is our stay at the Hotel Kirkwall. Kudus to all the 'Wild Team' and especially to John.

Review of John McCrae

I was trying to find the place on your website where I could leave a review. Can you guide me to where that would be or post this for me? John McCrae was an outstanding tour guide! He took us to all our favorite places! Since I don’t drink alcohol he paid special attention that I could go walk a beach while the others went to the distillery. He also would buy me a non alcoholic drink while everyone else was tasting the whiskey. He was totally respectful of me and my needs. This is only one of the many kindnesses that he showed. He went out of the way to not only please me but everyone on the tour. They all grew close to him and he made us laugh and feel like family! Most of all he became a friend to all of us as well as our guide! So many incredible memories we made with him that we’ll never forget! Shauna Gardner Orkney Islands Tour May 17-21, 2025

Visit Orkney

Great small group tour to Orkney and the Highlands. Our group was from many different countries yet got along really well. Our guide John M was excellent in providing knowledgeable and relevant information about Scotland in general and the specific places we visited. The enthusiasm for Scotland, travel and history shown by our guide made this tour memorable and I would highly recommend this tour. The ferry to Orkney, the cruise on Loch Ness, the whisky tastings , the castles , standing stones , beautiful landscapes, highland cows and the perfect weather made this trip memorable!

5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Edinburgh.

How much does 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh cost?

+

Prices start at $675 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Edinburgh usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh take?

+

Plan for about 120 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Edinburgh is not rushed.

Is 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 71 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 14 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Edinburgh, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 144 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 12. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 120-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh?

+

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Edinburgh can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Edinburgh and add a light layer if any part of the 120-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does 5 Day Orkney Islands and North Coast 500 Tour from Edinburgh start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Edinburgh within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Edinburgh?

+

On Outty we rank every Edinburgh experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Edinburgh: Loch Ness, Glencoe and The Highlands, Edinburgh: Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glencoe & Fort William, Edinburgh Ghost Tour: Mysteries, Legends and Murders. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Edinburgh?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Edinburgh?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
