Hameediyah, which started business in 1907, is one of Penang’s oldest restaurants. It was started by Mr Nalla Kader who came from the Ramnad district in Tamil Nadu, India. Mr Nalla Kader arrived in Penang in 1890, and was an itinerant “nasi kandar” vendor until he bought the current spot at 164-A Campbell Street in 1907. The ownership of Hameediyah was passed from Nalla Kader to his son, Muhammad, then to the great-grandson, Abu Baker after World War II. Abu Baker later passed the ownership to his relative Abdul Sukkoor, whose two sons, Seeni Pakir and Syed Ibrahim, run the restaurant today. This outlet provides full meal and as such will only be recommended for travelers who needs a full complete meal and may not be suitable for sampling and tasting

Penang Road Nyonya Cendol is one of the two cendol stalls located opposite each other in Lebuh Keng Kwee. A short and narrow street that is a must-visit place in the itinerary of every visitor to Penang. It was founded by Mdm Cheah Gaik Ling in 1958, making it one of the oldest cendol stalls in Penang. The current proprietress, Ms Loh, took over the business from her father, Mr Loh Ewe Seng, to become the third generation family member to sell this much-loved iced dessert. Besides cendol, ice kacang, ice balls, Taiwan Aiyu Bing and drinks are also available. Personally, I find the iced desserts here just as good as any. The service is fast and friendly. This shop specialises in Nyonya kueh – an array of cakes, dumplings, puddings and pastries that can be sweet or savoury, and steamed, deep-fried or baked. All their treats are made just as they were back in 1933, when the owner's father opened a kueh factory. Chowrasta Market
Chowrasta Market is the oldest market in George Town to still be functioning in the same spot. That area has always been a pekan, or village heart, when it was populated predominantly by various Indian ethnic groups. Originally an open air market, Chowrasta received its first proper structure when the George Town Municipal Council erected a market building here in 1890. That building is quite similar in appearance to the historic Sia Boey market building that is still standing today. The present market building was erected in the 1960s. It underwent a major facelift in 2012, which included adding a multi-storey car park above the wet market area. This is one of the big hawker centres in Penang. It is located along Kimberley Street, a major street food venues in George Town. There are quite a number of hawker stalls at Bee Hooi Coffee Garden. In my opinion, the Yee Foo Mee sold here is quite good. Other hawker foods available at Bee Hooi include Lor Mee, Hokkien Prawn Mee, Char Koay Teow, Fried Rice, and more. On the street close to the hawker centre are a couple of stalls selling economy bihun and one selling Koay Teow Thng by the sidewalk. Only applicable for Route 1 (Morning) Session

Highlight of our Trip
Brilliant. JS Lim was the perfect guide with incredible knowledge about the many and varied types of cuisine. The walk was not rushed, casual and relaxed. We learnt also much about the history of some of the historic buildings along with the history of uniqueness of the dishes we tried. JS Lim was also flexible is we wanted to try different dishes of our choosing. This was certainly a highlight of our trip to Penang. Highly recommended. Thanks

Best of Penang Heritage Site
Lim treated us to an interesting and delicious tour of Old Town Penang. We walked through the Heritage area, stopping for local food and drinks along the way. Lim planned everything perfectly. We met at a local Michelin recommended restaurant and started with desserts. It was a hot day, and we had cool local drinks along the way, fresh fruits, samosas, chicken curry, and Char Koay Teow. Lim gave us a history lesson as we walked, and we enjoyed seeing the murals, temples, jetties, and so much more of Old Penang! It was a wonderful experience for us!

The Perfect First-Day Experience in Penang: Food, History & an Amazing Guide
This is an absolutely fantastic food walking tour in Georgetown, Penang, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! This was so much more than just a food tour — it felt like a perfect combination of history, culture, and incredible local food all rolled into one. SJ, the tour guide, not only took me to some of the best food spots in Georgetown, but also shared fascinating stories about the city’s past. I learned so much about how the old town earned its UNESCO World Heritage status, the history of the early Chinese migrants, the Baba Nyonya culture, and so much more. It really brought Georgetown to life and gave me a much deeper appreciation of the place. SJ was extremely knowledgeable and patiently answered all of my questions — it was clear he genuinely loves what he does and knows Penang inside out. The very next day, I also arranged a private tour to Kek Lok Si Temple, and once again, it was excellent. He even made sure I didn’t miss out on amazing local food, taking me to the best spots for breakfast and lunch along the way. What really stood out was how courteous and thoughtful SJ was. He took great care of me throughout the tours — even providing napkins and an umbrella to protect me from the Penang sun. Those little touches made a big difference and made the experience feel very personal and well looked after. I would strongly recommend doing this tour on your first day in Penang, as you get so much useful information that helps you make the most of the rest of your stay. Thank you so much, SJ, for such a memorable, delicious, and insightful experience! 😊

Wonderful Penang Food !
I went on a food tour in Penang with my family, and it was a really wonderful experience. Our tour guide, Mr Lim was very friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. He took great care of us throughout the whole tour. He brought us to many amazing places for lunch and explained the history and stories behind the food and the different areas we visited. We got to try so many delicious dishes that we might not have found on our own. Each stop felt special, and we could see that he really loves sharing Penang’s food culture. We enjoyed every moment of the tour and learned a lot at the same time. My family and I are very happy with the whole experience. Thank you to our guide for making the day so enjoyable. We truly appreciate your effort. Highly recommended to anyone visiting Penang!

Making a special trip even more special!
My family planned a birthday trip to Penang for my dad. Since we have not been to Penang for some time, I thought it advisable to book a food tour. Best decision ever! Lim knew the best places to sample the multitude of foods that Penang has to offer. He planned the tour so well, and interspersed the food stops with heritage sites that allowed us a glimpse of the rich history and culture of Penang. Lim had such depth of local knowledge, and was full of nuggets of information on both the food and sites, which made the walk even more enjoyable. The 3-hour walk through this UNESCO heritage site allowed us to make more stomach space for the amazing food, a big shout-out for the chendul & assam laksa at Penang Road and samosas in Little India. Thanks Lim for making this special trip even more special, we would not have found all these foods without you!
