Positive Activities, But Concerning Experience as a Solo Female Traveler

This review is primarily intended for solo female travelers, and it doesn’t bring me any pleasure writing this but I feel it is important to share my experience so others can make informed decisions. I found Danu through TripAdvisor after reading many positive reviews. I was looking for a flexible homestay experience that included places such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, elephant viewing, and Kandy. I also read comments mentioning that his wife helped with breakfasts, which gave me additional comfort as a solo female traveler, that at least another female would be present. Based on the reviews, I also thought there would be other guests staying at the property. When I reached out to Danu, he was super responsive, provided a reasonable rate, breakdown of activities and sent a driver to pick me up in Negombo - I thoroughly appreciated the short notice arrangements. The driver was excellent, professional, and made me feel completely safe. He took me to Dambulla and then drove me to Sigiriya, and that portion of the trip was wonderful. After arriving in Sigiriya, Danu took me to a farming village experience, which I genuinely really enjoyed. Later, he said he would take me to see elephants, but first wanted to stop at a friend's birthday gathering because there might be elephants nearby. When we arrived, there were no elephants, only a small group of 4 men. During the gathering, Danu began drinking alcohol and repeatedly encouraged me to dance in a way that made me uncomfortable. He later apologized and said we would continue on to see elephants later that evening. An hour and a half later, evening (7PM) came, and while driving his jeep, Danu started making personal advances that I really didn’t want anything to do with. I had to divert his attention, and finally I asked him to pause, reflect, and pray. He eventually stopped his advances, but then he began to stop his jeep a few times, closed the lights completely, and repeatedly asked me to attempt to drive a stick shift. By this point, I definitely no longer felt at ease but I remained calm and asked him to head back, which he finally did. When we got back to the homestay, his property had no wifi and my sim didnt have reception in the room, so I had to go to a neighboring property to get a signal and notify my family of what was happening. It really upset them. Danu apologized again the following morning. However, the experience had already changed what had started as a really enjoyable trip into a very stressful night and uncomfortable situation. Keep in mind, we are in a fairly remote jungle area here. I decided to go to Lion Rock (in the morning) but after that, I ended my stay early (no Kandy, no elephants), paid the agreed amount, and another driver was arranged to take me back to Colombo. That driver was also very professional and courteous. I want to acknowledge that there were positive aspects to the experience, particularly the drivers and some of the activities that were arranged. I also truly hope that what I experienced was an isolated lapse in judgment rather than a reflection of Danu's usual behavior. That said, I believe it is important for solo female travelers to know that this was my experience. Most importantly, I do not believe it is appropriate for a host or guide to consume alcohol while responsible for a guest's safety and transportation. Couples or groups may have a very different experience than I did, but as a solo female traveler, I would have appreciated knowing this possibility in advance.

Amazing guide and now our friend!

Initially we only booked our accommodation with Danu, but our overnight stay spontaneously turned into a guided tour. He picked us up from the airport at 4 a.m. and then drove 3 hours to his accommodation (SIGIRIYA), where we were given a very good breakfast by his wife. On the same day we visited Polonnaruwa (royal city) and went on a short safari tour. The next day we went on a hike up the Pidurangala mountain and visited a farmer's village. The next day we went to Nuwara Eliya, before we got on the train to Ella, Danu showed us the herbal garden and a tea factory. When we arrived in Ella, Danu was waiting for us in his car with our luggage. He took us by the hand for our first few days in an unknown country, gave us lots of tips and didn't pull the wool over our eyes. He is incredibly friendly and funny. An absolute heartfelt recommendation to travel with him and get to know his home country!

    Tour of Sri Lanka

Danu was our tour guide for most of our stay in Sri Lanka. He collected us from Negombo and drove us to Sigiriya (stopping at Dambulla Cave temples on the way!) In Sigiriya Danu took us on Safari to Minneriya National Park, an amazing experience and Danu was very good at going to quieter areas and not following the crowd which we much preferred! He has so much knowledge about the elephants! We stayed 3 nights in Sigiriya, then Danu drove us to Kandy, he gave us lots of suggestions for places to visit and eat, we went to botanical gardens there. We stayed in Kandy 1 night then Danu drove us to Nawara Eliya where we got the train ride to Ella - Danu kindly drove our luggage to Ella so we could enjoy the train ride! We spent 3 nights in Ella, Danu provided us with lots of information, drove us to the top tourist destinations but also drove us to less known attractions that can be enjoyed by the local people which we loved and made amazing memories. Next Danu drove us to Yala and recommended great accomodation for 2 nights, we had an amazing time at Yala National Park before Danu drove us to Mirissa and we said goodbye! Thank you Danu for an amazing trip we will never forget! We would highly recommend Danu as your tour guide in Sri Lanka, he'll make sure you have the best time and is a very kind and trustworthy person. Many thanks! Bohoma istuti :) Shelley and Glen
