Disappointing experience – repeated upselling, missed attractions and an itinerary not honoured
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this tour. While there were some positives, the overall experience was deeply disappointing, particularly given the itinerary advertised and the amount of time we had allocated to exploring Jordan. I want to begin by acknowledging that our driver, Fares, was punctual, polite, friendly and easy to communicate with both before and during the trip. He also handled a difficult situation at Mount Nebo exceptionally well. The road had been closed for a cycling event, but he successfully negotiated with the police and event organisers to allow us through. This was genuinely impressive and appreciated. Having a dedicated driver for pick-ups and drop-offs was also convenient. Unfortunately, this is largely where the positives end. From the moment we were collected, even before getting into the car, we felt subjected to persistent attempts to sell us additional activities and services, both within and outside the itinerary. This became increasingly uncomfortable and ultimately affected our enjoyment of the trip. Day 1 – Mount Nebo, Madaba, Dana Nature Reserve and Shobak Castle Mount Nebo was a pleasant stop, although the views were hazy. This is obviously weather-dependent and no reflection on the driver. However, the advertised visit to St George's Church in Madaba to see the famous Mosaic Map was skipped entirely, without explanation. Instead, we were taken to a mosaic workshop supporting people with disabilities. While this is undoubtedly a worthwhile cause, it was not the attraction we had booked to visit. We also felt uncomfortable being followed around by the person running the workshop, with considerable pressure to purchase something, which we eventually did. Dana Nature Reserve was equally disappointing. Rather than the scenic reserve experience suggested by the itinerary, we stopped for approximately ten minutes at an underwhelming, litter-strewn roadside viewpoint before continuing. Shobak Castle was another major disappointment. The itinerary explicitly advertises an hour exploring the castle, including its towers, stairways and historic walls. Instead, our driver pointed it out from a distance at the roadside and told us it was closed. We were not taken to the castle at all. Consequently, three of the four advertised attractions on the first day were either skipped or substantially reduced. We arrived at our independently booked hotel in Petra considerably earlier than expected. Day 2 – Petra and Wadi Rum The transport arrangements were punctual and reliable, but the upselling continued. At Petra, our driver offered to arrange a guide, initially quoting an extraordinary 70 JOD per hour for a four-hour tour. A quick online search suggested this was wildly excessive. We declined and instead booked a lovely two-hour tour directly through the official guide centre at Petra for just 50 JOD in total. Interestingly, on the journey to Petra that morning, our driver claimed he had been misquoted and that the price was actually 70 JOD for two hours. Even this was considerably more expensive than the official guide we subsequently booked. He also arranged a packed lunch for us to eat in the car afterwards, which we paid for ourselves but nevertheless appreciated. At Wadi Rum, the same pattern emerged. We were offered a jeep tour at what appeared to be heavily inflated prices. Having researched the options beforehand, we declined and booked directly through our accommodation instead. Both our Petra and Wadi Rum accommodation were independently arranged, as we had booked this tour for transport rather than accommodation. Day 3 – Aqaba and the Dead Sea This was by far the worst day and the experience that ultimately cemented our one-star rating. The advertised itinerary includes two hours in Aqaba, with the opportunity to explore the city, stroll along the marina or enjoy the beach. Instead, our driver repeatedly tried to sell us a glass-bottom boat excursion at prices that appeared substantially higher than those available online. When we declined and asked to visit Aqaba independently, as advertised, he was clearly reluctant. He insisted there was nothing worthwhile to do in Aqaba unless we booked scuba diving or a glass-bottom boat tour. We researched private beaches ourselves and found one where we were happy to pay the entrance fee and spend an hour relaxing. Despite this being entirely consistent with the advertised itinerary, he flatly refused to take us there. He also repeatedly claimed that beaches in Aqaba, including private beaches, were only for locals and inaccessible to foreigners. This was simply not credible. He then attempted to take us directly to the Dead Sea, effectively skipping Aqaba altogether. We insisted on visiting, at which point he suddenly remembered a beach he could take us to. The beach was underwhelming, and we were given a maximum of around 30 minutes before being hurried back to the car. This was particularly frustrating because the tour explicitly allows two hours in Aqaba. Furthermore, we had independently arranged accommodation at the Dead Sea, meaning the driver did not need to wait for us during the advertised two-hour Dead Sea visit or undertake the return journey to Amman. We were already saving him a considerable amount of time. Despite this, we felt rushed and obstructed when trying to enjoy even a fraction of our allocated time in Aqaba. Overall The repeated upselling was uncomfortable, but the more serious issue was the failure to deliver the advertised itinerary. Attractions were skipped, visits were reduced to brief roadside stops, and on the final day we felt actively discouraged from enjoying Aqaba because we had declined the driver's additional excursions. I appreciate that this was a transport-only booking rather than a fully guided tour, and we never expected the driver to provide guided commentary or pay for admission. However, we absolutely expected to be taken to the advertised attractions and given the time allocated to them. Fares was punctual and personable, and his efforts at Mount Nebo deserve recognition. However, punctuality alone does not compensate for the missed attractions, persistent sales pressure and, most disappointingly, his conduct in Aqaba. We would not recommend this tour. If you are considering booking, I would strongly suggest arranging your own transport or finding an operator who will honour the itinerary without repeatedly trying to sell additional services.

Qutaibeh was a fantastic driver (and guide!) for the 3-day trip down to Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba. He was timely with his arrival as well as suggesting for us to arrive early at key sights such as Petra to ensure that we had the best experience possible. Qutaibeh was extremely flexible, enabling us to see exactly what we wanted to see during our tour whilst also providing lots of useful and fascinating information about each sight, and about the general history and culture of Jordan as a whole.
