What you'll see and do
Will start the day in central Mexico City with amazing coffee and pastries at Hagamos Composta Cafe, the community center with the largest independent composting project in the country. We will then depart in a private van to the UNESCO heritage site of Xochimilco, a place for a pleasure cruise and also a vital agricultural resource. We’ll learn more about Xochimilco's culture and food and meet the people who maintain its one-of-a-kind agricultural system.
60 minutes here
Mercado de Xochimilco
Our first stop will be the vast market of the area of Xochimilco. We’ll try different pre-Columbian dishes such as tlacoyos (oval-shaped corn-meal patties filled with fava beans, cheese, refried beans, spinach, potatoes and more) handmade by local women who set up shop every morning at one of the aisles. As we explore the market we’ll learn more about the different kinds of produce that are grown locally in the chinampas.
120 minutes here
Xochimilco
We will track the market's local products back to their source as we ride our own trajinera through part of the ecological reserve that is particularly rich in flora and fauna. Will traverse the canals – through part of the ecological reserve. As the boat glides through the canals that connect the chinampas, we’ll have an onboard tasting of seasonal products fresh from the market. After docking, we’ll return to central Mexico City by private van.

Fabulous food tour
One of the best food tours I’ve ever done in my life. Great intro session into the city while having special morning drinks, great ride into Xochimilco, fabulous market. Every bite a total hit while learning about some of the biggest hits of Mexican food. Seafood, meat, vegetables. Wow! The social impact project Cullinnary backstreets is doing in Xochimilco is very impressive. Super knowledgeable guide, Victor!! One of the best food (and city) I’ve taken in my life and I’ve done more than 20 around the world. Thank you!!

Our family had a great time... our guide was exceptional and we learned so much about Mexico City culture, food and eco systems. So much delicious food... but even more an understanding of the changes in Mexico City food and water issues through the years.

Unforgettable!
A terrific experience lead by Liz and Raul who were both very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the food and culture of Xochimilco. The market tastings were great as was the chinampas visit. I got way much more from this experience than I ever could have expected. Thank you!

This was such an amazing experience! I loved getting such an in-depth food tour in a market setting and being able to explore the canals. What a beautiful setting this was. The guides were such wonderful people and very easy to talk to, and I appreciate the work they're doing to support these farming practices. Will highly recommend to others!

Why this scores 69
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Mexico City.
How much does 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco cost?
+
Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Mexico City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Mexico City is not rushed.
Is 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 10 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Mexico City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Mexico City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Mexico City and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 2026 The City Green Exploring the Urban Eco-Reserve of Xochimilco start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Mexico City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Mexico City?
+
On Outty we rank every Mexico City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Frida Kahlo VIP [Museum Tickets Included] Walk, Markets & Churros, Local Foodie Adventure CDMX: Tacos & more with Sherpa Food Tours, Mexico City Historical Centre Food Tour with 7 Tastings & Drinks. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Mexico City?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Mexico City?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
