Beyond the Desert: An Unforgettable Egyptian Adventure

When planning my trip to Egypt, I searched for places that felt truly unique to the country—places where I could enjoy extraordinary scenery, experience local culture, and create memories that would stay with me for life. That search led me to the White Desert and the Black Desert in Egypt’s Western Desert. I initially planned to spend three nights there, but due to itinerary constraints, I chose a one-night stay in a camp under the moonlit sky of the White Desert. Looking back, even that single night gave us an extraordinarily rich desert experience. I discovered Sahara Egypt Tours and contacted Mr. Mostafa. What followed became one of the warmest and most cherished memories of my Egypt visit. The experience was genuinely door-to-door: the team picked us up from our hotel, Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile, and returned us to the same place after the adventure. The tour is designed as a two-day, one-night experience combining Bahariya Oasis, a 4×4 desert safari, the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, White Desert landscapes, traditional meals, camping, campfire dinner, stargazing and sunrise. Sahara Egypt Tours also lists bottled water and hot and cold drinks among the arrangements—something we particularly appreciated during our visit. The journey to the desert was itself an incredible experience. At times, I wondered whether I was still on Earth, on the Moon, or on another planet entirely. The landscape on both sides of the road was so stark and unusual—without people, animals, trees, or grass—that I was left amazed by where I was. The Western Desert felt immense, remote and almost other-worldly. Reaching Bahariya Oasis marked the transition from the long road journey into the real desert adventure. After a short lunch break, the real adventure began in a Land Rover/4×4. The Black Desert was our first major desert landscape, with dark volcanic hills and black sand creating a dramatic contrast with the surrounding golden desert. We then continued toward Crystal Mountain, known for its sparkling quartz crystals. The route also takes in desert areas and natural features before entering the White Desert. Sahara Egypt Tours describes the Agabat area as a place of striking landscapes and distinctive “flower stones,” making it another memorable part of the off-road experience. Visiting the Black Desert and then the White Desert was unforgettable because of the extraordinary contrast between the two landscapes. Even the White Desert seemed to have two personalities: the Old White Desert, with its distinctive limestone formations and translucent stones, and the New White Desert, where surreal chalk and limestone formations rise from the ground like enormous sculptures. Wind and time have shaped these formations into remarkable natural forms. Most remarkable was the feeling that our small group of four or five people were alone in the middle of this vast, extraordinary land. The absence of crowds made the landscape feel even more magical. Then came the experience of camping overnight in the desert under the open sky. This is, in my view, what makes the one-night/two-day itinerary so much more special than a simple day visit: you get to experience the desert at sunset, at night and again at sunrise. It was two days after the full moon, and clouds covered the sky at sunset. Around 8:00 PM, the moon rose in a way I had never seen before. I have witnessed memorable sunrises over Mt. Kanchenjunga, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea, each special in its own way, but this moonrise deserves a place among those rare experiences. Dinner outdoors, with a baby fox nearby, was another unforgettable moment. The food prepared by the team was excellent, and two American tents had been arranged for us. The campfire, traditional food, desert silence and the enormous sky created an atmosphere that no conventional hotel could possibly reproduce. When we went to sleep around 11:00 PM, the sky was still cloudy. Suddenly, I woke at 3:00 AM and sensed the entire surroundings covered in a soft white glow. I stepped outside the tent and saw a splendid sight: the moon shining brightly above, washing the whole landscape in gentle yet powerful light. It is difficult to express what I felt then. I wondered, “Am I only a small creature on this Earth?” and “Am I the only living being in this vast land, where the moon seems to speak through its light to the strange landscapes of every shape and size?” We travelled in the beginning of June, when the desert weather was hot and dry. Yes, it was scorching, but to our pleasant surprise it was not unbearable at all. In fact, we enjoyed the heat tremendously! A major reason was the thoughtful preparation of Mr. Mostafa and his team. They arranged adequate drinking water, along with cold drinks, throughout the journey. Those simple but essential arrangements made a huge difference, allowing us to explore the desert comfortably and enjoy the experience rather than constantly worrying about the heat. This is an important point for anyone considering a summer desert trip: with sensible planning, hydration and an experienced local team, the heat can be managed surprisingly well. All of this was possible because of the meticulous arrangements made by Mr. Mostafa and his team. I deeply appreciate the hospitality of the team, including our guide, driver and companion Mahmood. They were much more than service providers; they became our companions in the desert. We loved listening to their stories about Egyptian culture and history in the deep darkness of the New White Desert. Their local knowledge, route selection, desert driving and camp arrangements helped us experience the landscape in a relaxed and personal way. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that will remain in my memory forever. The combination of the Black Desert’s dark volcanic landscape, Crystal Mountain, the surreal limestone formations of the Old and New White Deserts, the 4×4 adventure, desert camping, traditional dinner, the baby fox, the extraordinary moonrise and the silence of the night made this much more than a sightseeing tour. It was an encounter with a completely different side of Egypt. All credit goes to Sahara Egypt Tours and especially to Mr. Mostafa and his team for making the experience so comfortable, authentic and memorable. I strongly recommend them to anyone seeking an adventurous and deeply memorable journey into Egypt’s Western Desert. If you have only one night available, do not underestimate what this two-day itinerary can offer. For us, that one night was enough to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Incredible experience out of time

We spent 2 days and 1 night in the desert as a couple, and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. From the very beginning, our guides have been very attentive and professional. We were able to discover a wide variety of landscapes: the White Desert, the Black Desert, the Crystal Mountain... each stop was more impressive than the last. The night in the desert was magical. We slept in a very warm and comfortable tent, and the meal prepared on site was hearty and delicious. There are a lot of agencies for this type of excursion and the choice was difficult, but we relied on good reviews... and we are really not disappointed! An experience we recommend 100%.

Our family had an amazing time!

Our family of 5 (we have 10yo triplets) with a friend and her 15yo son had so much fun at the White Desert! Our kids tend to get bored visiting museums etc but this trip had many tangible fun activities like the sand dunes to climb up and sandboard down, cliffs to climb, amazing natural formations that change drastically, and all those stars to sleep under!! We were surrounded in mother nature, with the comfort of Moustafa and his crew cooking yummy meals for us from scratch. The crew was so prepared for every moment/need and we felt very well taken care of. We felt adventurous yet safe. This trip ranks at the very top of the kids' Top 5 things from our Egypt trip. We are so glad we took a few days to go on this memorable desert trip!!

The best camping trip ever

I have been traveling the world the last few years to celebrate my retirement. The camping trip in the White Desert, with side trips to the Black Desert and the El Heiz Water Education Community Center, is my absolute favorite. My guides were experts with great skill making me comfortable in an environment unlike any I had ever experienced before. I should say environments because every hour seemed to open up new environments including a mountain of quartz crystals, rolling dunes, wind-sculpted outcroppings, small oases with trees and fresh water springs, and high ridges in the distance. I still feel the body/mind/spirit cleansing of that amazing time camping in the desert.
