About this experience

The Rainbow Mountain Tour Full Day, experience the most amazing colors of the Andes Mountains, explore in a full day hike to the most spectacular Vinicunca – Peru. Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain, became one of Cusco’s most popular day tours, where you get to see; yellow, red, ochre, white and turquoise mineral stripes in the mountain lend it wow appeal. From the Cusipata – Pampachiri approach, the 10km round-trip is gentle in grade, reaching a hillside viewpoint facing the mountain. From the top, you have 360-degree views include nearby Ausangate (6384m), the highest mountain in southern Peru. Since the high altitude (reaching above 5000m) takes its toll, try to ascend slowly to conquer the summit of Rainbow hills of Peru. Rainbow Mountain Peru, however, has breathtaking views easily allow you to forget about the 2 hour struggle you leave behind. The Ausangate glacier on one side and bizarre, colourful peaks on the other.

Excellent tour!!

This visit was included in the tour that lasted 6 days and 5 nights in Cusco. I want to highlight the kindness of the guides and their constant concern for each of the travelers. And I want to emphasize Rosaura Peña, who was always attentive to all the details and especially to ensuring that we had a very good experience. Totally recommended. Additionally, they gave us some practical and nice gifts that were very useful.

My Rainbow Mountain Tour was fantastic!

Visiting Rainbow Mountain was one of the most memorable and breathtaking experiences of my trip to Peru. Also known as Vinicunca or the “Mountain of Seven Colors,” Rainbow Mountain is famous for its incredible natural stripes of red, yellow, green, and other vibrant colors. Located high in the Andes Mountains near Cusco, the journey to this unique destination was both challenging and rewarding. From the early morning departure to the final views at the summit, the entire tour was filled with adventure, stunning scenery, and unforgettable moments. Our day began very early in the morning when our tour group was picked up from our hotel in Cusco. The drive to the trailhead took several hours, but the views along the way made the trip enjoyable. We passed through small Andean villages, open valleys, and mountains covered with snow. Watching the sunrise over the Andes was a beautiful start to the day and helped build excitement for what was ahead. Before starting the hike, we stopped for breakfast at a local restaurant organized by the tour company. The breakfast was simple but satisfying, giving us the energy we needed for the hike. Our guide explained the route, the altitude, and gave us advice about pacing ourselves. Rainbow Mountain sits at more than 5,000 meters (over 16,000 feet) above sea level, so the thin air can make the hike more difficult. The guide reminded us to walk slowly, drink water, and take breaks when necessary. The hike itself was about 3 to 4 kilometers each way. At first, the trail seemed manageable, but the high altitude quickly made it more challenging. Even though the path was not extremely steep, the thin air made every step feel heavier. However, the scenery along the trail made the effort worthwhile. The surrounding landscape was incredible, with rolling mountains, wide valleys, and herds of alpacas and llamas grazing nearby. Many local people were also there with their colorful traditional clothing and horses that hikers could rent if they needed help reaching the top. One of the things I enjoyed most during the hike was the peaceful atmosphere of the Andes. The fresh mountain air, the quiet sounds of nature, and the wide open views created a feeling of calm and connection with the environment. Even though many tourists visit Rainbow Mountain each day, the area still feels natural and untouched. After a steady climb, we finally reached the viewpoint at the summit. Seeing Rainbow Mountain for the first time was an incredible moment. The colors of the mountain were even more impressive in person than in pictures. The stripes of red, orange, yellow, and green stretched across the mountain like a giant natural painting. It is amazing to know that these colors were formed by different minerals in the soil over millions of years. At the top, our guide gave us time to take photos and enjoy the view. From the viewpoint, we could also see the nearby Red Valley and the surrounding snow-capped peaks of the Andes. Even though it was cold and windy at the summit, the experience felt truly special. Standing there at such a high altitude and seeing such a unique natural wonder made the difficult hike completely worth it. After spending time at the summit, we began the descent back down the trail. The hike down was much easier and faster, giving us more time to enjoy the scenery without feeling as tired. Once we returned to the starting point, our group had lunch at the same restaurant where we had breakfast. The warm meal was a perfect way to relax after the long hike. We had a fantastic team with Happy Gringo Tours!

1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cusco.

How much does 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco cost?

+

Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cusco usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco take?

+

Plan for about 12.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cusco is not rushed.

Is 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 74 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 14 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cusco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 1. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 12.5-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco?

+

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cusco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cusco and add a light layer if any part of the 12.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does 1 Day Rainbow Mountain Tour From Cusco start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cusco within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cusco?

+

On Outty we rank every Cusco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sacred Valley Full Day Tour, Peruvian Cooking Class Cocktails and Market Tour in Cusco, Cusco: Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Premium Day Trip with Meals. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cusco?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cusco?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
